We are looking to go from the Tunnel in Calais to Annecy in May next year. I am looking for site recommendations and the best route. Will it be better to take 1 or 2 nights to get there. Suggestions for overnight stops also wanted.
We are not sure whether to stop at Black Horse CC site overnight (most likely)and get an early train. Or get a later train and stop after an hour or so. Once again suggestions would be appreciated.
Can't comment on sites as we use a budget hotel but it's dead easy drive to do with one stopover by going Calais-Reims-Troyes-Dijon
Last year did later train- about 5pm and stopped in Reims which left about 6 hour drive this year we got a 1:30pm train and stopped just south of Troyes and left a 4 hour drive
Beware depending were you staying Annecy can take ages to get through,this year they have roadworks in the city centre which made it worse but both times we have been it's taken over an hour to get from Annecy to south of the Lake but maybe a bit quiter in May so not so bands
We have stayed twice at Camoing Les Fontaines and loved it

We travelled from North Wales to the outlaws in Bedfordshire on the Friday evening, got a 09:30ish train on the Saturday & overnighted at the Troyes municipal campsite.
On the return we stopped over at the Cambria site.
The Troyes site is quite large & I'm guessing it would be open in May, but it may be worth checking the Cambrai site opening times.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Les, When we last did that trip we aimed to avoid Black Horse Farm and get over to France in time for dinner in a restaurant in Calais or Boulogne on the first evening. From there you can certainly get to Annecy in two days if you wish, but are you in a tearing hurry?
We have spent whole days in Reims, Chatillon sur Seine, Troyes, Dijon and Beaune and would happily go back to any or all of of those towns if we were travelling that way again. And just looking at the map I think I might aim for a couple of days in Paris on the way back, but you may be more rushed than we were.
You have around 170 miles to get to Dover in first place and then around 500/550 miles to get to Lake Annecy area, so really it depends on how many miles you wish to drive in a day
If you only have say two weeks I would look at doing with one overnighter but I am happy doing around 300 miles or so a day if using autoroutes
If you have longer then as above why rush, take in a stay around Reims maybe as lots to see in area, or even go down largely toll free route via Belgium / Lux /Alsace area of France
If it were me I would probably look at driving down to Dover area for overnight stop near there and get early ferry/train and then get down to around north of Dijon area for an overnighter and then into Annecy area next day
We did Somerset to Troyes via Calais then on to Annecy the next day.
Wasn't to bad with traveling on the AutoRoute's.
As said the traffic through Annecy was busy.
We may be facing similar quandaries now, as my remaining sibling is probably moving from Dover so we won't have the comfortable stopover any more, gutted. How selfish could they be?!
I'll be watching the suggestions with added interest.

We are in France for 6 or 7 weeks so no rush, we are going from Annecy to Oradour sur Glane then to St George De Didonne near Royan.
If you stopped at Boulogne does that mean you went from there down to Poitiers or down through Amiens?

We have never been to Belgium, have you any idea of stopovers, the mileage or time for going that way?

I have had a look at the Troyes site and it looks very nice, Cambrai is another option, which we will look at.
