Love the way some posters think the court system is a waste of time. The OP has been charged so he must be guilty..... Even Monty Python went to the trouble of finding out if the woman that was accused of being a witch floated

The speed limit signs in Holland are very small & you have to watch for them, motorway speed limit is 120kph, but a few sections are marked as 130kph, on some sections limit is reduced to 110 or 100 but there is no large sign to warn you of this. Towing limit is 90kph.
Out of town single carriageway roads are 80kph unless outerwise indicated, 90 or 100. As you drive into town, at town sign limit reduces to 50kph but usually no sign. In town centres there are no road markings, you give way to traffic from right at all times.
Watch for cyclists, knock one off & car driver is responsible by law.
Its easy to make a mistake & Dutch drivers hate it if you drive under speed limit, they will sit on your back bumper & overtake in daft places.
A few years ago we ended up on a motorway in Austria by mistake. It really, really, really was a mistake as we mixed up the green and blue direction signs.
We didn't have a vignette as never intended to be on a motorway and received a HUGE euro fine for a 10 min motorway stretch.
We did try to query it and pleaded innocence.
Thing was the Austrian policeman had a HUGE gun. No arguing there then.
Similarly with us in Italy more than twenty years ago - when we were fined the equivalent amount of the original poster in this thread (rising as new 'offences' were added after we failed to cough up the small amount originally insisted upon) - and that was a huge amount back then!. The two Italian policemen had guns, too, and 'insisted' we pay in cash! We had no choice, no courts to fall back on, or changes of passport, or any other 'get-out' clause. We were literally taken to the bank, and had to change all our travellers' cheques. Fortunately we were on our way out of Italy at the time, going back into France, and we have friends who live near St Tropez so they were able to help us out with a loan to cover the rest of our holiday.
Complaints to the Chief of Police (or equivalent) in the town of Ovida in Italy, and our 'Consul' in Italy fell upon deaf ears, too!
I have related this story in several previous posts, too, as a warning that 'you just can't argue with the police'.
So, I personally have little sympathy for the OP.

When in Spain this year, plodding along at the motorway towing rate of 50 mph (trailer over 750 kg) ... got bored with numbers of local trailers flying past ... so eventually ended up doing 70 mph .... was passed twice by police, who just looked back at us, seemingly curious, and then ignored and went on.
Talking to some locals later, they said that pretty well all towers ignored the 80 kph rule ... and that the police would only ever stop someone if they looked dangerous.
Long drives at 50 are extremely boring ... I'm afraid I didn't and wasn't.

Well, Stuart, I'm hoping to go back to France next May and if you are feeling generous, I may even end up taking some Camping Cheques with me, bought on here

Exactly the same thing happened to us in Austria, we were on the motorway before we could do anything about it and before getting chance to buy a vignette. By then I was frantic and desperate to get off it again, I was so worried. We exited the motorway at the next junction and went straight to a garage to get a vignette.
Unlike you we didn't get fined, but I can't tell you how worried I was, the relief to get off and to that garage!
I really sympathise with you, it seems a harsh fine for a genuine mistake, but like you, if that had happened to us, I would have paid too in that situation.

I was thinking of going back to France, after two excellent previous visits, but I must say, I am also very tempted to take a nice slow amble through The Netherlands... I hear it's a beautiful and relaxing country, where you simply can't help but relax, miles away from the stresses and strains of everyday life.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
