The best access to Montpellier city centre is to use the park and ride - signed as P +Tram - on the north east edge of the city as you drive in from Sommieres.
Nimes doesn't have that but has lots of smart multi storey underground parking close to the city centre - but with height limits of about 1.85 metres. The guide books say to hike around the Roman remains. Instead we wander the cafe bars, always tour the amazing displays in the indoor market hall, and go for lunch on the roof terrace of Norman Foster's glass and steel cube, the Carre d'Art. Take the lift in the far right corner of the lobby. Few tourists know of it.

Head for La Grande Motte and follow signs for the Casino. This will take you to the sea front. There is a fantastic beach there which is sheltered and hardly used. It's about 45 minutes from Sommieres. Sommieres is a great little town and this time of year you may even get the festival in the town. Masserau is a lovely campsite too.
You can also get a tram to the beach at Palavas. For ruins, I still have an ambition to get to the Cathedrale de Maguelone, out on the marshes. It's quite a walk. Aigues Mortes is a good visit - old fortified town and seaport now landlocked, and the Camargue with black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos is worth drive.

Thanks for the replies everyone - some great ideas there which should fill my lunch hour researching!
It's going to be our second year visiting Sommieres, so we're pretty familiar with the town itself (althouigh we somehow missed the wine co-operative! That will be rectified this year!), but we didn't explore the area too much last time.
Walk up Pic de Loup. Visit the gardens and Roman tower in Nimes. Get the map in reception and do the walk to Villeview and other places like Junas quarry, Roman water mill and wind mill. Drive to to the via dometia just south of Sommieres and see the Roman town and bridge and also the Oppidium de Nages. Stroll down to the river from the campsite for paddle and maybe a swim.
As well as other places already mentioned.
