Directly below the search map, and above the list of "Special" search links, is the following:
"Green icons indicate Featured Sites which have full details and photos etc
Note: these searches only work on English, Scottish, Welsh, N Ireland, Dutch and French sites".
Not sure about those red and yellow pins though. (Only just noticed that "New - See all your sites on a map" link. Admittedly, I rarely use/add to my virtual brochure, and have got into the habit of just saving my sites in my bookmarks.) Hopefully someone else can help you with that one.

Likewise, wouldn't have known that feature was there if it hadn't been mentioned!
Pins seem to be the same as the flags, though - ie yellow where details are provided by the site, red where only basic details (plus usually reviews, and often website links) are available.
