It is possible to visit quite a bit of the Normandy D Day sites without it being too dry and boring for the not so interested and young.
In Quistreham (near Caen) there's Le Grand Bunker. At the end of the day, if you are 6 it's like a castle tower you can climb up, with a big gun and view from the top.

5 mins walk away is the huge beach with frites vans and cafes. In the evening it looked like there was Go Karting.
Arromanches has a D Day museum and 360 cinema. It is also situated on a pebbly beach where you can see the remains of Mulberry Harbour. There were lots of snorkelers in there and children playing. It also has a few restaurants, cafes aand places to buy ice cream.
