as our outfit is over 12m in length, the marker boards are a requirement however I cannot find any reference on how they should be fixed to the rear of the caravan according to Spanish law requriements.
I am referring to way they are fixed onto the caravan and not the way they are displayeddisplayed. Can you use velcro, sticky pads or are the aluminium plates required to be screwed to the body of the caravan?
We would be very reluctant to use screws to fix the plates to the rear of the caravan as it will invalidate the water ingress warranty in that area especially as you have to remove the plates when travelling in some other EU countries.

I used number plate sticky pads and no one stopped me!
I don't think it would really matter as long as they are fixed at the correct height etc.

On one van we had the outer vertical surfaces of the van were rounded as to make the fixing of the plates impossible.
On one occasion I strapped the plates to the rear handles and on another occasion I went inside the outermost part of the van and stuck them on the vertical surface of the rear panel.
I don't believe it's a question of the Spanish being pedantic as to where and how the plates are affixed. They are concerned that you actually HAVE the plates displayed.

Strictly speaking they should be alloy plates and riveted. However, double side sticky should be ok. I often fix them to the handles at with cable ties (being careful that they won´t scratch the van). Have towed many thousands of miles in Spain with a variety of caravans, 5th wheels, etc and never had a problem.

Thanks. I have a letter from the Spanish equivalent of the Traffic Enforcement and there is no need to rivet them at all and using double sided sticky as you suggest is okay.
I was thinking of using cable ties as you suggest plus blue tack or mastic as we intend to have the caravan treated with Paintseal and the double sided sticky pads may leave marks.

Stick on Velcro then they can easily be removed when not required.
