We usually stop over in Burgundy, then head south to Lyon.
Annecy is good, well Talloires on the other side of the lake.
There is more for road bikes in this area.
If you want decent MTB trails, try the 'Port De Soleil'...it's fantastic, if you have full suspension. Otherwise you may have to be satisfied with the trails on the lower slopes.
Camping L'Horizon was our choice the last time we visited Annecy...fab location away from the crush on the other side of the water.
There are some nice places to eat in Annecy in the evening too.

Plus although l'horizon isn't on the beach, you get passes that give you free access to the private beach, as well as free crazy golf, pedallo and bike hire, tennis court hire as well, oh yes and free trips on the mountain bus
