Hi all, next year we are planning to go to France, we will be crossing at Calais and more than likely breaking the journey overnight somewhere? We like the look of Brittany but Hubby would prefer somewhere further south (Vendee, Royan, Rochelle etc) for warmer weather. But there are loads of campsites!! slightly overwhelmed! We want to stay in a pre-erected tent ( I couldn't cope travelling all that way then pitching a tent!) somewhere with a pool, near a beach and some entertainment, does anyone have any reccomendations? Thanks in advance, leah

When you say entertainment, do you mean nightly discos or the occasional BBQ, boules competition, and when will you be going? Hope you get some good suggestions, I am always nervous of recommending sites as we usually go outside the school holidays, or at the back end of August and into September, when it is very, very different to high season!

We used to do something similar with Eurocamp when our children were younger. Have a look at their brochures and those of their competitors. You will find a range of sites, but most will have the kind of facilities that your brood might appreciate. There will also be a number of youngsters of similar ages and a range of nationalities. Ours loved that mix of cultures.

Hi there,
I can highly recommend La Garangeoire in the Vendee.
We will be returning there in July for the 3rd year in a row with our 17, 15 and 10 year old daughters. They absolutely love it there and wouldn't hear of us trying somewhere different this year.
It's part of the Les Castels group and is a fabulous campsite - great size pitches, spotless facilities, every amenity and a superb programme of activities. It's approx 15km inland from the nearest beach and approx 25 mins from Les Sable d'Olonne. For us it's approx 4 - 4.5 hours drive from Cherbourg.
They have a range of pre-erected tents (safari tents), some more luxurious than others, eg with separate bedrooms, bathrooms, etc or just with EHU and furniture. I'm not sure which are managed by the campsite or by Canvas/Eurocamp, etc. But I would start by contacting the campsite directly. They have excellent English, are very helpful and are great to respond to emails.
------------- 2016: La Garangeoire
2015: La Garangeoire
2014: La Garangeoire & hopefully a couple of weekends in Ireland

Les Sables D'Olonne is a nice area, a busy non-pretentious type of seaside town with vast beaches and rocky areas. We stayed many years ago at Les Pirons which is in a small "village" a few km out of Les Sables, and has a bus service near the site into the main town and to the zoo. Should be hot enough weather being in the Vendee. They rent chalets, mobile homes and "canvas bungalows" ie tents :)

We've been to Domaine d'beaulieu in St Gilles and l'Oceano d'or in Jard. Both great places but the campsite in Jard edges it. They are through Chadotel.com and are great value.
Les Pin Parasol in the Vendee is fab. We went there for our first time in france with our TT 2 years ago. There was plenty going on for kids of all ages, not far from the beach (breighinolle sur mer) which was huge, sandy and not crowded even in high season and brilliant for rock pooling. Its right on the bank of a beautiful lake. Eurocamp had pre erected tents there and i think Canvas Holidays do too.
La Val de Vie is in the pretty village of Machè, on the Lac d' Apremont, with its lakeside beach. 20 mins away is the lovely seaside town of St Gilles Croix de Vie, with its Grande Plage & quaint old seaside houses.
Just outside the village of Apremont, where the plage du lac is, near the pretty Loire - style Chateau, is a quiet campsite called Les Charmes.
The whole area is very pretty, I feel that St Gilles has more old world charm than Jard or Les Sables, they're a bit too big for us. The weather in the Vendee tends to be better & more reliable than in Brittany, but if you want guaranteed wall to wall heat, keep going south.
