Hello; Can you get on to this site without going in to the emissions zone. There is a LEZ (environmental zone) in and around Freiburg for which you have to have a plakette or risk a £80 fine. Unfortunately 'older' vehicles (ours is 2002) are not allowed to buy plakettes.

If you look on Freiburg website it has a map of the umweltzone & a list of the streets covered. Then check location of campsite on google maps & the campsite off Kartäuserstraße appears to be within the zone.

There can be exemptions for foreign reg vehicles though for example if you have a hotel booking in the town so possibly this could apply to campsite bookings so I would check this with campsite directly.

Why not try a site in the middle of the Black Forest such as Trend Camping or Alisehof near to Wolfach . Much prettier area than around Freiberg.

Helen

Sometimes, depending of size of town/city the Umwelt zones are not always as large as you imagine so its possible that your chosen campsite might not be in the zone unless its right in the centre. There is usually good public transport to get around once on site.

Hello, here is an update from our visit to lovely Freiburg from August 2016 for anyone else wondering about the emissions zone around Freiburg (particularly with 'older' vehicles). Not being able to have a plakette (because of vehicle year/model/type) is NOT an issue if you are visiting the Hirzberg camp site or intend driving through the city without stopping. It is only an issue if you try and park in the centre of Freiburg. Freiburg is a an attractive and vibrant university city rippled with centuries-old buildings and the fascinating little streets of the Schneckenvorstadt (snail’s suburbs). Children drag toy sailboats on strings along the system of water-filled gutters known as the Bächle. Hirzberg Camping makes a great base for exploring the city and further afield inc. Schauinsland (1,284m), aka Freiburg’s ‘house mountain'. Fab. views over Rhine valley and the Kaiserstuhl and Vosges mountain ranges. Yes, Hirzberg Camping does get very busy in high season, but the friendly owners and manager work tirelessly to ensure all vehicle movements in and out of the site go smoothly and that good standards are maintained.

Glad you had a good trip. We went back south of Freiburg for second time this year to Munstertal and it is such a lovely area and loads to do.

Europa Park is a must for families or theme park junkies. Arguably best park in Europe

Loads of more "natural" things to do as well and we had great weather this year unlike 2014. Highly recommend a visit to the area for those who haven't been
