Just come back from Spain. Please be aware that there is a new campaign in Spain to stop wild camping near the sea (ley de Costa) that is currently being enforced (particularly in Andalucia)
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
At El Puerto de Santa Maria there are quite a few that wild camp right next to the beach on two car parks, the local police even patrol the car parks to check all is okay so no clamp down at all there, I also saw a few caravanners there on occasion but not brits!

Can we have some detail ie.
When did you go?
Where did you go? (Did you witness this mass evacuation?)
What outfit have you got? (Caravan or Motorhome)
I don't mind reading horror stories and as in fiction, horror is usually unbelievable. However to make comments such as printed above, we do really need some clarity.

Just to add to this thread, in October last we attempted to stay at Hondarrabia in the Basque country. We had stayed in Oct. the previous year.
However on this occasion there was a Local Authority notice stating 'No Overnighting' so we moved on.
When we returned on our way home, the sign was gone and there was no problem.
Where we stayed was in the car park, opposite the Marina and next to the beach.
Patrolled by both the local Police and the Guardia. We felt safe.
There will always be circumstances where the Police in Spain, suitably guided by local business interests (ie campsite owners) will make life difficult for people who do not want to stay in campsites, but, if you avoid the throngs on certain beaches, you can park, (good word, as opposed to camp) throughout Spain.
