We have used the toll tags the last few times we've been to France, we have however in the past year changed our caravan to a Autotrail Apache 700 Motorhome.

I know the tags are for for class2 vehicles, the Motorhome falls into class 3 - over 3M and over 3.5t

My question is what do other larger Motorhome owners do, have you used the class 2 tag? How would they know as it's not that obvious what category I should be.

The tag really made a difference when pulling the van, and really don't fancy going back to cash or credit card

Appreciate any experiences / advice you could share

Thanks

Mark

The tag is registered to you/your bank account/your credit card, not the vehicle.

The all seeing eye(s) and laser beams will determine how big your vehicle is, and how much to charge to your account.

We use ours with an MPV. The fact there is a roof box on and bikes on the tow bar doesn't affect the vehicle class/toll charge.
I'm lending my tag to my colleague next month, and they are going on a motorbike, so my account will get charged accordingly for their journey, as they are a different class to us... in more ways than one!

Same tag, same method, different charge(s). Carry on as before.

Mark, you can try with your normal tag and see what happens when you get to a toll booth. It may make a mistake and let you through as normal at class 2 rates.

On the other hand the technology may measure your Motorhome and simply not open the barrier at all, and if there is an operator there she will after a while come along and open up and charge you manually at class 4 .

Or if it's an automated barrier you press the alarm button and negotiate over the squawky intercom as best you can and explain the problem.

Or you get a tag specially designed for large motorhomes like yours from TollTickets.

Hi,

Our MH is plated as 3.85tonne and still gets charged class two so I think it is your actual weight. We are just on the 3mtr height restriction.

You will also need to place your tag much lower on your windscreen to be read by the scanner.

If you have a problem I have heard anecdotes of people in very large MH's simply pressing the intercom and stating "Camping-car - class deux si vous plait" - and they claim it works every time.

Is that a winking emoji... or is it a result of a virtual poke in the eye!

Thanks guys

I have read a few historic posts with no clear picture as it certainly does not seem consistent as to how larger Motorhome's are charged either via a tag system or even on manned toll stations.

Will take the tag with me and chance my arm - what could possibly go wrong 😬

From the look of the French websites, you can get a class 3 tag, but I think it's mainly for commercial vehicles. Your motorhome would fall into class 3,but not sure how it works if you are an individual and not a haulage company! Try looking at www.bipandgo.com for more info- they have a drop down menu allowing you to select their pages in English, and you might be able to email them...
