Having recently taken up tent camping again after a long gap, I asked recently on this excellent site for advice on sites along the Loire and received very helpful responses. However, having researched a little more, it strikes me that there may be less touristy, less busy but still interesting parts of France to explore. We are a retire couple in our sixties and looking to go late August/early September time. We like strolling around towns, pootling about in boats, fishing and French markets.
Any suggestions about where to head would be gratefully received.
Many thanks

have a look at Vouécourt in the Haute Marne, quiet, clean with good facilities fishing onsite, Lac du Der in easy distance, several weekly markets in the area.

If you aren't averse to the risk of a bit of 'British'-type weather Normandy is lovely - beautiful countryside, lots of history, nice coastal towns and wonderful food!
It's fun to go Calvados and cheese tasting, and the coastline between Caen and Cherbourg is really pretty. Can't really recommend any campsites other than our reliable stopover in Caen as we've done most of our touring either from there or in hotels, but I'm sure others can.

You are describing Brittany. Look around the towns of Quimper, Concarneau and Pont-Aven, there are loads of good sites near the coast between there and Lorient.

check out Camping Rodaven, Chateaulin, Finisterre and you won't be disappointed. Done it four times in a row - excellent site.
Alternately, if you want sites with loads of Brits, look for the sites run by Brits.

At the time you are going, everywhere will be less touristy! I would suggest several municipal sites, which are always conveniently situated for towns or villages, and often well appointed with local tourist info.
Perhaps look at Les Plus Belle Villages de France?
