ACSI ID Cards are a total waste of money as not one campsite has ever accepted it as proof of id in France,Spain,Portugal,or Andorra,We always ask and they all said no they do not accept it as a proof of id ,they all want to see/copy passport.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Campsites want your passports to stop you doing a runner without paying. An ACSI card is hardly a substitute for that so they will still want your passport. If you don't like that then pay upfront

Admittedly, I am far less well travelled than you, Opensauce, but thus far, I have not had a custodian of a French Camp site ask to keep my passport. To see it, yes. To note down the details and/or photocopy it, yes. But never to keep hold of it.
I would of course, be more than happy to pay up front if requested to do so, as I have done at every single UK camp site I've stayed at thus far.
I don't think it's wise to allow anyone to take your passport out of sight, as it isn't to allow a waiter (for example) to take your bank card out of sight.

I rather get the feeling that it may be obligatory at campsites in France for them to see your passport, I think I read in some small print somewhere. I don't always get asked for mine, and no one asks for OH's. Sites we have used before often have me on their 'puter so I suppose they can say they've seen the passport previously. I don't have the ACSI ID card, just the discount card which has my name and address on, I also record the 'van reg number because sometimes they ask for that too. Some sites keep the card (in lieu of passport?) and ask for payment on the morning of leaving. Most places we pay when we arrive, but this doesn't seem to be essential, I offer the cash. But we do a lot of 1 nighters.
Only 1 site we use regularly on the Cote d'Azur asks to keep my passport, but if you saw the throughput there, you'd understand why. There you pay the day before you leave.

It's is up to the campsite as to what they accept for id. Insulting or not that is the reason some campsites retain passports if you choose to pay when leaving. Why else would they do it? I've never had a campsite lose my passport & not paying upfront means you can leave the site earlier than planned if weather goes bad for example so gives one more flexibility.
I must explain that we never go in peak season/school holidays, for reasons discussed on another topic. 😀 Also rarely using the larger sites.
We have been touring in France for many years, I honestly don't know how many doing seven sites just last year, we have never booked a pitch and never been asked to leave our passports with reception, which is just as well because I would never leave it with them, under no circumstances.
In fact, most sites we have stayed at just give us a form to fill out.....If that.
They can take the details, photocopy it, even laugh out loud at the photo.......But they ain't gonna keep it. No way Jose.
I if I do get a refusal with a shrug of the shoulders, I will move on, which has not happened.
We stayed at a lovely hotel just south of Nante, twice in fact, it is part of a large chain. They asked me for my passport, no issue, when I had handed it over the lovely lady said I could pick it up when we leave. I very politely said that was not acceptable to me, and demanded she return it to me. The lady did not insist, just saying that in that case she will need to take a photocopy, which I of course agreed to. Everyone was happy. 😀😀
Cheers Mike. If a campsite wants a card to keep till I leave I give them my bus pass. It actually has a rather good photograph - not at all to be laughed at.
