Hi
We plan to go to France end of August 2018 for two weeks.
We cant decide on where to go.
Have three areas in mind
1 Royan.
2 Dordogne
3 Lake Annecy
As we have no kids a smaller site is OK. We dont need entertainment. Would definitely like a pool, also walking distance to a town/village so wouldnt always have to uae our car.
Thanks.

All good choices and all very different. How can any of us choose for you . We don't know you !
Read the guide books about each area, decide what you want to do on your holiday - and when you have chosen one of the three areas some of us on here might be able to suggest suitable campsites you would like - and if you have a caravan rather than a tent you could even do a little tour.
At the end of August there is absolutely no.need to book, and you won't want to be on a booked site in Annecy for two weeks in the rain, when th Dordogne or Royan are sweltering in sunshine. Have a look at the Eurocampings website (not Eurocamp the tent and mobile company) for loads of sites on one website, read the reviews done by people visiting in late August, and look on the site search on here. Then ask about any sites you fancy. Two days before you leave check the weather forecast and head in the direction of the area with the best forecast.

Absolutely second what Val A says. We always depart uk last week in. Aug and never book anything. Weather can change dramatically at this time of year. For the best weather you really need to be below Bordeaux
We always book as we like to know we have the site we want. The weather can obviously put a spanner in the works. If you have a caravan then this is easy to up and go at a days notice, but when you have to put a trailer tent up (like us) then this would be a major drag.

May 18, Delftse Hout, Delft
Aug 18, Le Logis du Breuil, Royan
Arrive in France, look at the weather and start off towards the sun. Consult Archies as you toddle along and pitch up when you feel ready.
It takes all the worry and strain out of decisions

Annecy - small pitches and busy but a Gr8 base to explore the alps from.
Provence - Luberon Valley - have a look its gorgeous. I can recommend the campsite in Gordes. Domaine des Sources is the site name. We have no children to please...I do not want to be entertained and prefer to be able to walk in to town...this fits like a glove. We were within easy travelling distance of Aix, Cassis Avignon. The Luberon is stunning and is the location for the film 'A Good Year'.
We always go last week August 1st week September for Roberts birthday on the 31/08 and our anniversary.
We rarely book, but you may need to for Gordes.
The well known shot of the lavendar fields and the Abbaye is 7 minutes from Gordes . Its i Senanque Abbaye, although no lavender in August as it will have been harvested.
Bonnieux, Opede-les-Viex, Roussillon, Menerbes are all stunning places within this golden triangle of beauty away from the NEW MONEY on the Cote D'Azure...the real money is in the Louberon. Classy, discreet FAB.

That recommendation has resulted in me provisionally booking Camping Des Sources, Gordes from 24th August to 5th September 2018. I guess I'd better tell Roberto when I get in :)

We always go to France for the last 2 weeks in Aug. Last yr, by beginning of 2nd week, site was virtually deserted. This yr, same week and site, it was still very full as we left. You wouldn't have got much choice turning up on spec.
I suppose it depends what type of site you're looking for. We don't tend to book our stopover site on way down and back again but I do book our main site. I spend a lot of time researching where we want to go etc. so like to know we've got it.
I'm now in process of sorting for next yr. Thinking about Annecy too or may give Dordogne another go (was overcrowded and wet when we went a couple of yrs ago) Think we picked the wrong site though!
