I wish people would stop knocking the winter sun rallies. We’re on our second year and already planning which ones to do next year. I really think you should try one first before saying it’s your worst nightmare.
We actually went to look at a small house in a village in the Algarve a couple of weeks ago and decided we wouldn’t like to be so isolated. OK, the rallies are a bit like a village but the age range is huge, so many different types of people, lots to do - which you don’t have to do, nothing is obligatory. Today, for instance, we’re going to Cliff Richard’s vineyard. The rally stewards organise various trips and minibuses to places you’d otherwise need to hire a car to get to if you were in a motorhome, as we are. The stewards are very knowledgeable about the area and you’ll get to know things you may otherwise miss out on.
We were in Spain for Christmas and New Year last year and it was great fun.
Rallies are cheap, too. We’ve paid about £1,400 for 11 weeks including our crossing, which I think is pretty good. Winter sun is fabulous - it’s hot out here, there are few tourists and the roads are wonderfully quiet.
A rally is not everyone’s cup of tea, I understand that, but to dismiss it out of hand is a bit harsh. It’s also a very good way to introduce yourself to camping abroad.
