I think Nicepix's means Oradour-sur-Glane, which is the village which was left 'as was'. It's very moving, there is a huge visitor centre with history of the village, the village buildings are just as they were left, including a car with the door open and bullet holes, a baby's pram, etc - and it's quite 'haunted'. It's about an hour and a quarter from Ruffec and is a 'must see' if you're anywhere nearby.

The village was destroyed because German intelligence was searching for a captured officer, who was actually being held in Oradour sur Vayre, but they got the name wrong.

I've added this separately as I can't get it to appear with Nicepix's quote - the whole thing appears in 'pink'.

Thank you Val. Thats sound like a really interesting place to visit as we all love history. On our to do list list this year

Terry, May I suggest that you don't limit your choice to municipal sites - there are small, privately owned sites that will meet your requirements just as well. And although you mentioned the Charente there might be more for your teenagers if you moved nearer the sea in Charente Maritime.

A big orchard behind a farmhouse we have used several times is called Le Logis de la Lande at Saujon - a few miles inland so away from the worst of the crowds, but close enough to drive to the coast, with a choice of calm sea or surfing beaches.

It's an open orchard without defined hedged pitches, has good facilities + electricity but no swimming pool or entertainment - and for the five of you will cost about 24 euros a night unless their prices have changed. You won't be alone there, but I think aphone call a day or two in advance would get you in even in August. There is a website with photos.

Good muni at Mansle, on the Charente river ... beside a kayak slalom course.

Excellent central Charente site, putting you not more than 30/40 mins from all the main coastal attractions (eg La Rochelle) ... Angouleme is 20 mins ... Futoroscope half an hour ...

Mansle is on the central spinal route through the Charente: N10.

Worth considering.

Good call!

I haven't visited the camp site, but do fish near to Mansle quite regularly. It is one of the most beautiful areas in the region and well worth a visit.

We liked Camping les Platanes. No lake but nice river. Think we were the only English psople there. If you look up my trip report there are a couple of pics.
