I’ve been doing some research to enable me to enjoy U.K. tv in Southern Europe while on holiday on a non subscription basis.
The Intelsat 907 satellite at 27.5 West carries backup feeds for U.K. Terrestrial TV transmitters bbc itv 4 and 5 film 4 plus radio it’s footprint covers reliably Down to Southern Spain using just a 0.8m dish.
It uses an older encryption system the codes for which rarely change and when they do the box supplier keeps customers informed.
The U.K. provider is sourcing new receiver box the cost of which circa 200 quid. Existing dishes for free sat should work with one of the new receivers. I’llhave more details soon which I’ll share if anyone is interested. I retire in July and fancy 6 weeks in southern France with a little tv and mainly radio of an evening so I’m going to get one of the new recievers as soon as they’re available.
Granted this feed won’t be available indefinitely but will exist for a few years so worth a punt.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Good luck with that David, I guess you have read "Sat and PC Guy" article on the subject.
Personally I would not bother with Intelsat 907 and the SatBack Freeview service, unless I could hold of a BISS compatible reciever for next to nowt, as in a couple of years it will only be usefull as a doorstop!
We use a 1m Gibertini Aluminium Dish (alloy LNB holder) with an Invacom LNB.
Most of the time we can get all the Freesat channels down in Frejus on the Med, there is the odd day when only Sky News TV and London Radio is comming through, but apart from that it's a reliable service.
We use a Humax Foxsat Freesat+ 320gb PVR receiver, so we always have the option of watching recorded stuff if needed.
I would put your £200 away in readiness for the SpaceX StarLink service, which will allow you to watch UK TV, be it Freesat, Freeview or Virgin TV using an antenna the size of a 10" Pizza Box.
Just a case of waiting untill 2020 for when the service begins, two test micro satellites were launched last month, and results are looking good already, they just need to get another 4,000 micro satellites up in LEO to complete the system.
Yes Francais I did read the sat pc guy article and for obvious reasons it’s guarded although interestingly offers links to th BISS codes.
Realistically SpaceX Starlink is more like 2024 as to date only 2 prototypes of their proposed 1200 satellite fleet have actually been deployed. It is a very ambitious plan and would revolutionise the telecom/it industry but usually if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it usually turns out to be a anatidae anas!!
It sounds to be in free lunch territory so since I won’t live for ever and intend touring this year, don’t possess a 1m Gilberto Aluminium dish with aluminium lnb holder, Invacom lnb or Humax Foxsat Freesat receiver with PVR, and lack the desire to do so I’ll pursue this option and report back.
Hello David.
My wife and I spent the last 2 weeks this January in the Costa del Sol.
We made use of Intelsat 907 for BBC News, and BBC Entertainment Channels.
I also found some European Channels of interest (specifically for myself and some French Chums on site, Euronews) on a Transponder that matches one on 23.4 degrees East.
Specifically, 11.495GHz, Vertical, S/R 44100
And 12.227GHz, Horizontal, S;R 27500
Watching television was NOT 'de rigueur' for us, but helped to pacify my wife
It will be useful whilst it lasts.
Just saying.
Regards James

James, what make model of satellite reciever are you using, and which link do you have to the BISS codes for when they change.
In fact have you ever had to update the BISS code, if so do you do this via memory stick, or is it a case of hooking up your reciever to the laptop or PC.
I might just pick up a BISS reciever and give it a go whilst down in Frejus during July.
Yep James, I have of course slept since 15th February, so all is forgotten, but it's good for folk who have not seen the previous post to learn about Intelsat 907.
I was not aware that the Technomate satellite receivers are BISS compatible, so that is also good to know, do you know which model of Technomate is being used as Technomate have many models.
It will be interesting to see what happens when Intelsat 907 is no longer in operation, which is scheduled to happen before 2020.

Is it legal to view these channels?
Well the answer has to be NO, viewing encrypted copyright content without permission is illegal.
It is not possible to purchase a legal subscription for the service. Any company or individual offering the service, is doing so without permission from the broadcasters and is breaking the law.
There are companies or individuals selling receivers overseas who fail to inform customers that hacking into encrypted channels is illegal.
Although the BBC BISS keys are available on the internet, some unscrupulous satellite installers charge their clients for them.
It is also common for some installers to change the receivers PIN number, allowing only them access to the receivers menu.
Just saying

Thanks James.
Hardly crime of the century, watching Freeview outside of the U.K., if only Freesat had been Soft Encrypted in the first place, like what the equivalent French FrancSat service is, then like the French we would be able to watch U.K. Freesat TV anywhere in France and Spain etc, with just a 55cm Dish.
It really does annoy me that U.K., went down the Spot Beam route for Freesat.

I thought it was Sale of the Century with Nicholas Parsons.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
Will follow with interest, but my own and word of mouth experience the more "exotic" boxes can and have been a nightmare. Myself, we are going to the south of France with w 1.1 metal dish and a Humax freesat recorder. Please update as to how you get on with it and I do hope it works well.
Just to provide an update on this as I’m sure it’s still of interest.
The GTMedia V7S2X satellite receiver will do the job and is recommended. I’ve got one and it works brilliantly. It’s very small but gives a great picture. You can run it off 230V or 12V (you need to buy an appropriate lead).
You can get it from Amazon for less than £40. Much cheaper than the crazy prices some suppliers are charging for other receivers. You just need the latest firmware available at https://www.freesat.cn/forum/
