I'm thinking about storing my caravan in France. Are there any likely problems relating to insurance or French law? Recommendations of insurance companies who cover France would be useful too.

You may have better luck on the caravanning abroad page. There have been a number of threads on this topic.

If you do a search for storage in that section you'll find several threads about insurance and the other technicalities.

We have done this, but firstly decide if you are going to store on a site and use only that site, or store and tour. We found it well worth doing. 👍😀

I intend to store near a site I normally stay and the storage owner will tow my van to the site. I can then choose to stay or move on. I will have to make my mind up by next spring so I need all the info I can get.

We insure through Towergate - one of the only UK companies who insure vans stored in France. Don’t know what they’re like if you need to claim, but otherwise I’m happy with the cover and their charges are reasonable. They check out where you store the van (using Google Earth, not in person!) before agreeing to offer insurance.

We too insure with Towergate, and have stored our caravan for more than ten years now. We have had two claims (not major ones, but significant) which have been settled without a problem, and quickly - with our local (trusted) dealer doing the repairs.

Currently we store on a site in the Ardeche but after three years are thinking of moving on next year. We don't spend all our time on that particular site, but tow the caravan away and have have spent some time this holiday in the Correze, the Lot, and we're now in the Vercors. After three years at the same site we are hankering to try somewhere else.

Kelper put me on to this storage area too. I can vouch for it being an excellent, clean, secure, dry facility.
Note that you have to remove any gas cylinders during storage.

There are a couple of sites nearby so ask for recommendations if you go for it.

Most storage sites insist you remove your gas bottles and they are sometimes kept in a separate area. If this is the case make sure yours is marked with your name on the cylinder in permanent marker.   We had our bottle stolen on one storage site - the tie on label on our full bottle swapped on to an empty bottle.

The up side was that it was at the time of the Calorlight replacement, the swapped bottle was one of the affected ones, and so we got a free replacement!

The removed bottles, on our storage base, are kept in a lock up cage and only accessed by the site operator ... who is very efficient and marks all bottles.

I'd be extremely miffed if I ended up with someone else's empty bottle!
