Hoping to get to Amfora this year in bay of roses. Our car caravan combination is 13m. Now I know that over 12m you are supposed to have marker boards in Spain, but I donít recall seeing them save on large motor homes. As we are only travelling approx 30 miles into Spain is it an absolute necessity, ie do the guardia rigorously enforce this?...

We had them stuck to the back of our 12.8m outfit a couple of years ago, and they are still there. This was just to get from Santander to the Pyrenees in France. The question is, "Do you feel lucky?". You might be lucky and not get stopped. Many people do not get stopped and fined. A few do and it really depends on what mood the Guardia are in that day and that time. We thought it wasn't worth the worry so stuck some on the back of the caravan with double sided tape.

Few years since we took ferry to Spain (Bilbao), and then only with solo car, but on both occasions we were surprised at the high density of Police observing/patrolling the roads around the port! Much higher density that we encountered on our holiday driving in and around coast and Cantabrian Mountains regions.

Can only conclude they were specifically monitoring ferry traffic! No idea what it's like these days, if better, worse or the same. Seem to recall we were warned that some types of Police (can't remember which particular type) are very strict and there was no latitude given, thankfully never had any encounters to find out.

Rather than risk it better to comply. After all you are visiting another country and should comply with their rules and regulations. I would expect someone coming here to abide by our regulations.

Does it state anywhere that they have to be permanently affixed to the rear of the vehicle? Why not do what my brother did. Fix them to a piece of rigid material e.g. aluminium plate which in turn has foam/rubber on the back of it and then cable tie them to the rear grab handles of the caravan. You can then remove them (before somebody else does)and put them back on whenever you like and no permanent change to the rear of your caravan.

Ours are on permanently, but can be removed easily. We used the Command stick on hooks.

Unfortunately it is not a rule, it is Spanish legislation.

Ours was attached to a piece of UPVC facia board, with pipe insulation on rear handles to protect and space away from caravan rear panel, followed by tie-wraps through holes in end of UPVC around rear handles.

Complied with height regs, and used for several years in Northern Spain including motorway across border from, Perpignan to Roses
