Planning a bit of a route on the Mosel & Rhine River, any recommendations for sites actually sited by the side of the river and within walking distance to a village/town.

We stayed at this site in Koblenz which is the confluence of both the Rhine and the Mosel, the campsite is next to the water overlooking the Deutsches Ecke. Overnight you can hear the sound of the barges/boats going up/down the river and the trains on the track on the opposite bank, we soon zoned it out.

Our visit there was in 2013 but it's still open. It gets a bit crowded on the pitches that overlook the river. The facilities were very good.

A short walk away is a river ferry that takes you into the city, our abiding memory of that was the boatman playing AC/DC very loud!

A short walk the opposite direction is a Netto for your main provisions although they did have a shop selling a few essentials on the site

Koblenz is a lovely city plenty to see and you can always take a boat trip.

In 2019 we stayed at Paradies-Camp in Krov (review below).

https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=19987

It's just across the road from the Mosel river, next to a large municipal pool complex (shut promptly at 7pm every evening so no disturbance), on the outskirts of a picturesque little wine town, surrounded by vines, with a couple of smallish supermarkets and a fabulous ice-cream cafe. There was also easy access to Bernkastel and Traben-Trarbach (and beyond) by road or even better, by river boat.
The site itself is pretty basic and the pitches weren't the biggest in the world and pretty close together (as seems to be the norm in Germany) but the campsite owners were really friendly (and the son spoke decent English), the facilities were good and we had no issues at all.
In our opinion, the Mosel area is stunning and overall we preferred it to the Rhine, although we really enjoyed our visit there too in 2017!
We stayed at Campingplatz Am Rhein at Rudesheim, and were fortunate to get a pitch overlooking the river (no direct access from the pitch - a fence and a path between you and the river - but there is to the riverside path from the site). This is a much bigger site but very well kept and run, with a fantastic shower and toilet block.

https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9186

We loved both our trips to Germany and would have no hesitation in staying again at either site.

If you want to be on the Rhein you could think about Campingplatz Rudesheim am Rhein. The river is in a flatter valley there so not so much noise from traffic and trains. Easy walk into Rudesheim and also to the ferry across to Bingham. Good place for boat trips along the Rhein. Don't forget to buy a bottle of Asbach.

Will second this site. agree with Asbach brandy but also try a Rudeshiemer coffee, not cheap but a must have. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here

There is a good campsite in Mainz - Camping Maaraue on an island in the Rhine and with a footbridge giving easy access to the city and bus to Weisbaden.

I thoroughly recommend Knauss Camping in Koblenz. A tad expensive and you really need to book. Ferry across the Mosel to the City and cable car across the Rhine to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress.

One thing I would suggest is that if you stay on a site with access to a railway, you can buy a very reasonably priced Rhineland pass that gives you (and up to 5 people) unlimited travel in Rhineland-Pfalz and Saarland which includes Rhine, Mosel and Saar valleys.

We stayed a few nights at Barencamp in Bullay. Directly on the river and by the village.

We stayed there in either 2016 or 2017. The river was so high it covered the path into Rudesheim. Cyclists who were cycling the Rhine river route were flummoxed.

Rudesheim is a pretty little village and you can easily get a train into Frankfurt. Bingen (not Bingham) is rather more industrial and not so nice.

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like we'll be able to make any foreign trips this year.
