As keen, old school under canvas, campers (we have had our Cabanon Elody for twenty years and it was secondhand when we got it) we would like to keep going to France as long as we can. With the progress of the years we have been camping closer and closer to the 'block sanitaire' for those inevitable night time perambulations. We have noted with interest earlier posts referring to French campsites with private bathrooms on pitch. These sound like they could cut down our nocturnal mileage. That string of posts, in 2017, had the really good list of sites from Val A. We usually frequent smaller, quiet sites and have never actually seen these private bathrooms in situ. Does anyone in this readership have experience of these either from hiring one themselves or observing them on a site you have used. We would like to know if they are regular plumbed in facilities. Do they have heated water? It is possible to imagine getting mains water and electricity to isolated plots, most sites have water and power reasonably close to pitches but more difficult to imagine mains drainage for toilets. Can they really have flushing loos? If they are not, for want of a better description, 'proper bathrooms' we could provide our own overnight solution in the tent. Are there potential problems we have not thought of?
Grateful thanks for any practical information you have.

I have frequently used them at Villiers Charlemagne, they have a seperate building on each pitch with shower, wash basin and toilet in one half and in the other separate half they have a Fridge a sink with draining board and storage cupboards with a large hot water boiler.

We tried the private bathroom idea at Camping la Nautique at Narbonne - flush toilet, washbasin, shower and hot water in a clean cubicle right beside the pitch. Actually it was a block of four private cubicles together, centrally placed in a group of four pitches. A nice idea and most reviews are favourable, but frankly it was a cramped, old fashioned cubicle and the shower with a flimsy plastic curtain flooded the floor, so not a luxury experience by any means. Functional and practical is the best I can call it.
But spend half an hour on Google and you will many more campsites across France offering similar or better facilities.

Not in France but we have used pitches with private facilities in the Netherlands. Flushing toilet, washbasin and shower. Even had underfloor heating. On the outside of the building and under cover was a washing up sink. All had hot and cold water. We found them very good, especially as there was a wide shelf for toilet bags and towels which kept them out of the tent where space was limited.
Site in Caceres Spain also has an individual block with a shower, toilet and hand basin per pitch, lovely site, very large swimming pool and a reasonable restaurant.
Bus stop outside takes you into the centre of the town.
Hi,
We have the one private bathroom booked at Le soliel des bastides at Cahuzac sur Vere late July. We stayed there last year & used it then; great shower with washbasin & toilet. & plenty of hot water. Well worth the extra money in covid times. And then we also have the same at Les Sablons, shower, toilet, hand basin plus washing up sink & fridge freezer. Each unit has its own water heater

Now that we are both just over the 60 line, we fully understand the OP’s conundrum and our solution was to add a full en-suite to our Cabanon tent complete with hot+cold running water using two 25lt water containers one for clean water delivery and the other for waste (grey) water collection.
We discard the two 25lt containers when we leave the campsite, as I have collected a number of them back home for free from a local car wash operation.
We replaced our tiny Thetford Porta Potti, with the larger Lidl equivalent also by Thetford, which gives a little more height if you know what I mean !.
I posted under equipment “Vanity Unit” a number of years ago, with photos of the build etc.
Hi Francais. We to have had a similar set up and it has served us well. You and Mrs Francais are still a young pair of campers and may you keep going for many years to come. We are twelve to fifteen years ahead of you down our camping journey and are looking for little ways to make ourselves more comfortable. These private bathrooms by the pitch seem worth giving a try and if medical advice [re-Covid] allows next year, we will try one out. All we will need then will be a way to get up from an airbed without undue strain.
It seems from the answers we have seen so far that these facilities are on mains drainage, which is good, and that there are quite a few sites that have them. Camping under canvas is such a pleasurable holiday it seems a shame not to carry on as long as possible.
Yep Stillnowiser, I get that and I hope you find a campsite with private facilities that ticks all your box’s, and keep us posted with the outcome.
I hope we can continue into our 70’s and beyond just like you, and if the tent gets to much, we will look into having a small touring caravan stored close to our favourite campsite.
