Raised as a concern by Stuart in another thread, anyone thinking of travelling to the south of France should be aware of the wildfire situation there: see here.

We had to be evacuated from our campsite in Cavalaire-sur-Mer at 01.30 on Tuesday due to the fire. We had to leave everything on site and were told to head to the beach for the night. When we arrived at the beach the local sports centre had been opened and was used as a base for people to sleep. We were then allowed back on site later that day, however after speaking to several Dutch campers who know the area well, we decided to leave early and make our way North.
We were actually in Gassin and then Saint Tropez on the night when the fire started and it was pretty scary with all the smoke. I would avoid that area as the fire still is not under control and you are at the mercy of the wind, which can obviously change quickly.

Not the best holiday vibe, then! Did many people appear to be packing up to leave after the night at the beach experience?

Thanks for your advice about avoiding the Mediterranean basin. We'll be heading out next week so will watch the news with interest.

Glad you're safe and sound.

I think there were about three other pitches near ours that packed up. Plenty of people stayed, however we were due to leave on Thursday so only cut our holiday short by one day. Have a great holiday and stay safe.

There have been several fires around us in the Aude. One burned the whole side of the Alaric mountain, from the A61 to the doors of Fabrezan and was scary to watch even from several miles away, as the flames spread very quickly down the hill we could see. There have been others at Boutenac and at Narbonne Plage, in the Mountains of the Clape.

Stay safe everyone and don't throw away used cigarette ends, which is how these things usually start. According to Remi our local fire chief almost every wildfire starts with a driver, or a walker, or a hunter, throwing away a cigarette end.
