Can someone please give the the definitive answer, what does this actually mean?
I travel to the EU twice a year for a period of 56 days each time, mid May to mid July returning to the UK for 6 weeks until the end of August to mid October.
Am I ok or not? Probably being unbelievably thick but just cant get my head round it.
Thanks for your help

With kind regards Judi

Any time you are in the EU space you must be able to look backwards for the previous 180 days & find you have not been in the EU space for more than 90 days.

In your case assuming you will have been outside the EU for over 90 days when you arrive for your 56 day stay you will then go home for 42 days so total of 98 days. If you then return to EU you have another 34 days before you must leave as you will then have been in the EU for 90 days within 132 days. If you stayed any longer that would take you over your 90 days within 180 days.

If you haven’t been in the Schengen zone for 180 days before your departure in May and if your spring trip lasts 56 days, you could only spend 34 days on your autumn trip as they would be in the same 180 day rolling period.

Upon returning home after that 34 day autumn trip you would need to remain out of the Schengen zone for 180 days before returning if you then want to do something similar the following spring and autumn.

If you want two holidays of a similar length in spring and autumn you would need to make them 45 days each.

I guess the op will post back once they are over the shock of having their holiday cut short.

If you are touring ie caravan/motorhome then there is no visa to allow you to stay longer. Only way to extend a touring stay is to spend some time outside EU Schengen area.

There are several non Schengen EU countries. Croatia is probably the best bet. Time spent in Croatia stops the clock on your Schengen 90 days allowing you to keep to your time scale of 112 days away in total provided at least 22 of those days are in Croatia or indeed in Romania or Bulgaria if you fancy those countries.

Staying in France for more than 90 days?
If you plan to stay in France for more than 90 days in a 180 day period, or spend over 90 consecutive days in France, you will need to apply for a long-stay visa or visa de long séjour temporaire visiteur. This allows you to stay up to one year, but not to work or study. Visa applications are considered on an individual basis, and you must prove that you have sufficient funds and healthcare coverage for the duration of your stay.

Clearest explanation of French visa rules I have found is Here. Applies only to home owners or stayers at bricks & mortar addresses as far as I can see. I don’t know if it also applies to mobile home owners on holiday parks as well. It is not applicable to caravan/motorhome tourists.

It does look like there is a fair bit of cost involved & it applies only to France in this case or to whatever EU country you wish to stay in & each have their own rules regarding income etc. There is no long stay visa issued by EU covering all of EU Schengen.

I have made my rest of life plan. 90days mid June until mid Sept in France Dordogne & west coast will have to do. No more early May until end of Sept which is what we used to do. Once tests stop we will do a few winter day trips which is what we have always done & caravan in the UK rest of time.

That’s it really. I am done with being bitter. Done with trying to find workarounds. It is what it is. I’ve accepted it now.

Earlier this year i partially went through the process of obtaining a visa for travel in a motorhome, but stopped the application as there were too many complications and expenses with testing processes on both sides of the channel.

i spoke to Svetlana at the french agency who deals with visas and after some discussion between her and the french embassy, she was able to confirm that visitor visas WOULD be available for those travelling in motorhomes or with caravans - that isnt a work around, it isnt smoke and mirrors, it would be a valid visa for 6 months IN FRANCE - NOT FOR THE SCHENGEN ZONE - but that wouldnt stop anyone using their 90/180 if they visited other countries in the Schengen zone, so it would be a very good idea to document your entry and exit dates to or from other countries to demonstrate compliance, the critical point is that if you did visit other countries - it doesnt extend your 6 month visa - when it has expired, it HAS expired!

as there are no border controls between schengen zone countries, then it would normally only be exit/entry from Schengen zone that would be recorded officially, which is why you definitely need to keep your own records,

if you enter the zone via france and leave via france within the 6 month visa period, it will not show as 'breaking rules' - Svetlana advised me that after the visa had expired, i could use the standard 90/180 BUT i had to leave France into a non Schengen country before the visa expired and then re-enter again - the visa period couldnt be automatically extended by a further 90 days, i had to treat them both as separate entities.
