Our friends make and annual visit to Sirmione and would like us to go with them this September, but seeing as my husband will no longer fly, the only option really is to take our motorhome. Apparently there is a very nice campsite just outside Sirmione, but that's all we know really. Can anyone suggest how long it would take to reach Italy, and suitable routes/stop offs? We'd probably like to stay in different places on the way back, having spent around 4/5 days in Sirmione. We've done plenty of touring in France plus a road trip to Switzerland, although that was in cars not a motorhome, so distance is not an issue.
We're in the Midlands so any crossing is an option despite my loathing for the M25!

If you are finding the journey daunting because of ill health it might be worth looking at the Seat61.com website which will tell you how to travel out there by train. If your friends go ahead they can pick you up from Verona train station , and you will be able to rent accommodation on your chosen campsite at Sirmione. You may find that plan easier than driving 1200 km from Calais.
When we towed there we had a night halt at the Municipal at Montmedy after sailing to Calais. From there we went through bottom of Luxembourg to Campingplatz Illertissen for the night. Then we went down the Fern Pass and Brenner pass into Italy on to Lake Garda later that day.So from reaching France it took 3 days towing to reach Garda.

There are also lots of sites in Peschiera del Garda, 10 miles east of Sirmione and one short boat journey away. Most are walking distance from the ferry. A beautiful spot.

WE did a trip to Italy in 2009 and one of the sites we stayed at was Bella Italia at Peschiera Del Garda. I wrote a blog of the trip which includes the places we stayed en route in both direction. See here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/The_%20Italian_%20Blog_%202009.htm
Hi, Well, apparently, there are good sites just about everywhere!!
We have spent many happy staYS at Bella Italia which David has mentioned.
It’s a great site, in a perfect location, and in a MH probably better than the Sirmione sites. The bus to Sirmione stops at the gate and once set up you can probably manage without having to move off the pitch.
But, all that way for 4/5 days??
We have travelled there from Roscoff, Caen, Calais and Hook of Holland and it’s a good three day journey at least.
We have visited a number of sites in the area, including San Francesco at Sirmione, but none were better, for us, than BI.
The area is stunning and you can get around by ferry, bus and train and, after an enforced absence, we hope to be back there in June.
We went to Lake Garda a number of years back. Drove down through France for a week, then over the Alps and to Lake Garda in 1 day. We spent 8 days at Garda as the weather was lovely and hot, then drove back into France and spent another week coming home.

Crossed using the tunnel then headed down to Municipal at Beaune. From there to Mont Blanc tunnel followed by a stop in Val Veny at foot of Mont Blanc massif on Italian side.
Then Aosta down to pick up the A4 / E70 - we were heading to Venice - E70 takes you within a few km of bottom of Lake Garda.
