Hi all
with an optimistic plan to go to France at Easter we contacted vet today to address the dog's lapsed rabies/travel changes. Being told that each trip across we will have to pay £134 for a certificate that will only cover 1 country for single stay of max of 90 days .... plus worming plus rabies. vet explained lots of paperwork issues being highlighted on vet forums ie French border not accepting the certificate if stamps are wrong colour etc etc.. Anyone would think they are trying to stop us bringing our pups with us!!
Our vet suggested finding a french vet that would issue a Euro pet passport to avoid all the hassle each visit.. but our online search indicates the french vet must issue the rabies jab??? probably need a french address too??
Anyone recently travelled with their beloved four legged puppy that can offer any real experience/advice???
Huge thanks in anticipation of a plethora of replies!
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Yes our vet said some charge extortionate amounts to avoid the 3hrs it takes to complete the document ie £400-500
Being regular travellers with their own dogs I guess they are sympathetic to the on going pain
thanks
We were £125 for one dog and £75 for second. I think we were there approx two hours too get everything done.
Never heard anything about wrong colour stamps at French border, it's your carrier that checks the AHC. Eurotunnel did give it a good look over, checked the chip munber and that was it.
Not easy to get a Euro issued passport in France.

How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Is the AHC required for entry to Eu or exit? I think the rabies is also more for entry back into Britain so that makes sense. Worming is only required for re-entry to the UK and that has to be done in France by a vet. There is a thread on here regarding the location of vets on the continent.
I say checked on the way back but at Eurotunnel they didn't look at it, preferred to check the PP.

Having been through this last year I can give you some definitive answers and the benefit of my experience.
First, your vet is wrong, the AHC is valid for all EU countries for a period of 4 months but has an expiry date of 10 days from the date of issue to enter the EU and must have the country of entry written on the certificate.
If you have got an existing pet passport with an in date rabies jab then you're half way there, if not you have to start from scratch with the rabies jab etc.
I am a member of the AHC facebook group which is worth joining, lots of info on there and from what I'm hearing on there is that it is possible to get an EU passport to get around the AHC but very difficult in France as you need a French address, but it is easier to get one in Spain, so worth looking at. However most EU rabies jabs are only valid for 1 year and the booster jab can only be given by an EU vet, if it is given by a UK vet it invalidates the passport. I do believe there is a 3 year jab but have yet to look into that
You do have to double check the certificate to make sure it has been filled in correctly because as you say people are being refused travel even if a zero has been left off the microchip number.
£134 is a good price, my vet wants £150 and some are being charged up to £250 which is such a rip off because looking at my certificate from last year it would take me 20 mins tops to fill in
Abbeywell Vet's in Folkestone are highly recommended charging £100 and they do it online, the only reason I'm not using them is because you have to drop in to pick it up and have the dog scanned and there is no-where to park a car and caravan.
Edited to add and thanks to blueexpo for pointing it out, rather than having the country of entry physically written on the certificate, it has to be partly written in the country of entry's language

It is valid for all EU countries, but has to be in the country(s) you are visiting language.

Thanks Big Roy, very helpfull,
My vet has said it would be £120 for the AHC, he has continued our dogs Rabies vaccination records on a separate, innoculation card, I don't think we will be going back into Europe for another couple of years yet, so maybe by then things will smooth out.
I think you will find that most EU countries require the AHC in their language.

From the Royal college of Veterinary Surgeons:
An Animal Health Certificate normally includes details of:
Pet owner’s details
Your pet’s description
Rabies vaccination details (your animal will need to have been vaccinated at least three weeks prior to the AHC appointment and have had a UK Rabies vaccine within the past three years)
Rabies blood test (as required)
Canine tapeworm treatment (as required)
Intended country of entry into the EU. (The AHC has to be issued in the language of the country in which you are entering the EU and NOT your country of destination)

5. AHCs are available on this page as dual language certificates written in both English and the official language of each EU Member State. You must ensure that you issue an AHC which is written in an official language of the planned EU Member State of entry to the EU

If you are coming from a non-EU country originally, and coming in via France, you must enter Spain through one of the designated Travelers' Points of Entry (January-2022) and declare to the Guardia Civil's Tax Department that you are traveling with a pet and provide its documentation. In order to enter Spain, your pet must be at least 12 weeks and 21 days old, will need to have a microchip or other approved type of identification on their bodies, a current rabies vaccine, a health inspection certified by an official veterinarian in your home country (with Spanish translation) and certified copies of the identification and vaccination documents.
