we are going to netherlands this summer docking in france and driving through belgium into netherlands, we have just recieved an email from direct ferries saying we need an eu national id card, has anyone had to get one and if so why and from where thank you.

If you mean you are British then you need a British Passport, we don't have identity cards in this country.

I think someone somewhere is giving you wrong information, all you need is your UK passport. Surely only EU nationals can get an ID card issued by their home country. Check the expiry date on your passport before you travel.
