Just a bit of useful information for those about to travel to France, I got back on tuesday and filled up at 1.71 euros (about £1.45) for diesel before returning so don`t fill up before you leave the UK.

Looks likely with foreign transaction charges and exchange rates on my card, still cheaper or on a par to buy Petrol in UK. Probably do next month's 400 odd mile round trip to France on 2/3-3/4 of a tank of fuel anyway, so can take advantage of cheap Petrol if available otherwise don't need to be robbed more than in UK.
Hi Monty, We have cards that do not charge a fee and exchange is at bank rate. Today it wold be €1.92 a litre for diesel at my first stop next month.
That would be £1.62 a saving of just over 15 pence a litre over prices here.
I have used a couple of fuel price sites but now go to ViaMichelin where you can show all filling stations and, when you click/touch the location, the prices come up.

I see the French have still got Diesel significantly cheaper than Petrol, sadly not going to do me any good now I've got a Petrol car!

Like Allan Guest we have cards which don't charge any fees, so what you see is what you pay, and the exchange rate is better than most. We use Metrobank, Halifax Clarity or Nationwide, but there are lots of others and the new digital banks such as Monzo or Starling. It's really worth searching out a card which doesn't charge, before your next trip.
We paid £1.77 for diesel today in the UK. The French price of €1.71 is the equivalent of £1.45 so you'd have to pay a heck of a lot in fees to make it anything like UK prices.

Diesel may well be cheaper, but I'm buying PETROL and that's around £0.03/litre MORE expensive in France at 1.91 Euros/litre! And I really don't spend enough in France to be bothering with extra cards over the ones I use in UK. Most of our expenses have been pre-payed in UK, so maybe spend 50-60 Euros. Car will happily do round trip back to UK on a tank of fuel, so unless PETROL is cheaper, then no point in buying in France.

Our cards are the ones we use in the UK too. No extra cards, just our normal accounts, which we don't pay for, which give a useful additional extra of fee-free Europe wide payments and withdrawals.
We have a house in France, so spend almost six months a year there, and so our fee-free cards are essential. But, as far as being robbed, our commune has an initiative where on certain days the local fuel station, managed by the municipality, has subsidised fuel! It saves about 20 cents per litre, and started when fuel went up hugely in 2021. They are still managing to make enough money to cover the cost of running the station!
Hi Monty, I had assumed that if you were going to the trouble of researching prices that you would be spending more than €50-60!
Like Val the cards we use are nnot extra cards for Europe but the same that we use here.
Each to their own, but we use MSE to compare any finance related questions, such as bank accounts/cards and recently, following recomendations on MSE opened a Chase account that offers 1.5% interest and no fees on either spending or drawing cash abroad.
One plus for me is that it is app based, I am no techy, meaning that you get instant notification of any use but as said there are plenty of cards that may be of benefit and sometimes people find their existing bank has a beneficial card that they didnt know about.
