A recent survey in france, you know 50 similar items thing lidl and aldi were not the cheapest. I find eating out in the UK expensive compared to France, be it beachside restaurant, middle of large town, or small town or village, Super U is a good place to shop, came out middle in the survey, and is far better than the overpriced Casino group.

Instead of paying 3€ each for cone or magnum from an ice cream seller pay 2€ for a box of 6 at Lidl or Aldi & gannet the lot between you in the car park before they melt. Works for us.

Billy there are now cheaper supermarkets and you don't queue as long.

I agree, just what we do, and perhaps give a couple away to others!

I would really like to see the results of the survey MGBGTV8 mentions as Lidl is definitely our cheapest supermarket. I wonder which fifty items they compare. A decent tasting chicken in Lidl costs us just €4.49 compared to twice that in SuperU/Carrefour/Intermarche. Roquefort cheese (the official version not the supermarket own brand) is cheaper in Lidl. Their all-butter croissants are usually under 40 cents. We buy in bulk and keep a freezer drawer full as our local boulangerie has the most delicious bread, but sadly his croissants are stodgy.   We can buy perfectly drinkable wine in our local Lidl for 1.99 a bottle (and cheaper, down to €1.49 when their September Faire du Vins is on). It's our 'go to' supermarket, along with many of our French friends and neighbours and at the moment I prefer the evidence of my own eyes rather than a survey.

We learnt very quickly that it is preferable to buy a whole chicken that to buy chicken pieces in most supermarkets in France. We also found that the pieces seemed to have been hacked off with a chopper and not cleanly cut. Bacon is another issue in France as never been able to find it. No issue in Spain.

It depends on who does the survey and what products are surveyed, Tesco, Asda regularly do surveys where the compare a list of Items a lot of the products are items that have been deliberately reduced for the survey.

Poitrine Fume is just like our smoked streaky bacon, most supermarkets sell it. This, by the way, is coming from someone that gave up meat 4 years ago.

Just back from 5 weeks in Brittanny/Vendee/Loire Valley. Food prices in supermarkets seem a bit up from last year but there again they are in the UK.

Eating out about the same. Alcohol seems a bit more expensive but it depends on where you buy it.

Diesel about 1.98€ a ltr on average at supermarkets and 2.20€ on motorway.

In our local Carrefour contact there is a 5€/kg difference between brands of chicken breast, the cheaper 8.95/kg looked inedible.
Lidl is good for some things but the meat has a higher water content than others.

Around here L’Elerc is the cheapest for a full weekly shop and the best meat comes from the abattoir.

Prices have gone up as usual because it’s summer but I doubt they will come down again.

Val - what Lidl wines do you buy out of interest? Will be heading to Lidl when we get to France in August. Any recommendations from anyone else at around the 2 euro mark most welcome!
