We visited La Roque Gageac last Saturday and parked in a small carpark at the entrance to the village, coming from Beynac. There were signs to indicate it was a Payant carpark and clearly stated it was 7 days a week between 7 or 8 am and pm. We duly paid our 3 euros and got our ticket, though some French cars arriving after us didn't bother. Imagine how smug we felt when arriving back to the car about 20 minutes before our time was up, there was a parking warden going round and checking the parking tickets on the cars and taking multiple photos and issuing tickets/fines to those who were not displaying their parking tickets. I'd say the traffic warden certainly justified his employment that day - and that was in just one small carpark! So if you're ever tempted to not get a parking ticket, be aware that checks are made, even at weekends!

Last week our eldest was over for a week - we did his favourite things from when he was ten to early teens when we used to come on family holidays out here - Domme for the view, Castlenaud ditto, Roque Gageac for a gabare trip, canoeing from Vitrac to Beynac............
In both Roque Gageac and Domme the parking wardens were out in force. More money for the local economy
A few years back we stopped in one of those carparks, and not having the correct change for the ticket, we went into a shop to buy something to get the change. We told the man why we were shopping, and he said 'this is Tuesday, the warden comes on Friday'. Sure enough, no one else had a ticket.
Can't remember if we bought one or not.
We were in Le Crotoy last weekend, parked on the road next to the sea, bought our ticket. They don't charge for parking 12-2pm, and it's 1 euro per hour outside that. As we arrived at 12.30 we paid 1 euro until 3pm. Had our lunch sitting on a bench watching the tide come in in glorious sunshine.
I don't think any one minds paying a reasonable fee of a Euro, but in the UK they more they can charge you the better and then they wonder why High Streets are dying!
Lots of French towns offer free parking at lunchtime, much to the benefit of their restaurants. In Le Hourdel, we were unable to pay with the app mentioned on the side of the meter and I was frantically shoving our last centimes ( it was the end of the holiday) in the machine when I actually read the notice properly and realised it was free. I think I added the equivalent amount to the tip in the restaurant in sheer gratitude!
