Since 2010 I have based our road trip plans on the fabulous contributions on this forum.
We've just returned from Limone Sul Garda and it was great BUT we need another GEM.
Criteria:
A lake ( for SUP)
Mountains
Rustic town/ village nearby
We love Italy - never been to Puglia or Le Marche.
We also love France and have travelled extensively, but never been to the Ardeche or the Dordogne.
Austria is a consideration.
12/14 hrs away is about as far as we want to drive. We split it into a 2 day journey with a hotel on the first stint.
We travel Hull to Rotterdam.
Ideas welcome.
(Kelper has to great suggestions)
Camping Nanzel in Limone will take some beating but we need to try something new.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Ireland is on the cards anyway.
My cousin has a farm with several hectares in Scarif. He provides 'worms' for the fishing fraternity.
The main summer break is definately a European road trip.
The weather needs to be up there in the mid 20s for me to enjoy SUP/ kayaking. No way am I putting on a wetsuit and dipping into cold water.
I've been looking at Maggiore.
We have some pretty fabulous scenery in the nearby Yorkshire Dales ( we're only 20 minutes from Wharfedale)...some people actually holiday in our village.
No, its got to be SW France or the neighbouring countries.
I appreciate the suggestion though.

Have you been to the Auvergne in France? It has mountains and lakes, we stayed just outside of Murol, but I wouldn't describe that as overly rustic. It does have a very nice castle though!

We've been to the Puy de Dome.
Rustic is essential really.
Plenty of time to plan I guess.
Maggiore is looking favourable.

Have you thought about Switzerland, specifically in the Interlaken area, from Thun to Brienz ? Maybe somewhere around Spiez for instance, mountains / lakes / rustic by the bucketload. eg Campsite Grassi - on a river 15km into the mountains from Spiez, a 20 min bus ride away or Panorama Rosshern - nearer the town. Both are ACSI sites if it matters to you.
Alternatively what about around lake Annecy, slightly less mountainy but built for watersports. And my final suggestion is on the (cheaper) Southern French shores of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva), from Yvoire to Evian-Les-Bains, although again slightly less mountainy. Both of these last two places have loads of sites to pick from.
Annecy - fabulous area nr St Jean Le Sixt.
We've been many times. The site was in La Plein Du Fournoy....stunning and peaceful.
Not impressed with the campsites aling the lakeside towards Doussard...not a patch on lakeside Garda.
First went to Annecy to usevit as a base for TDF.

The Dordogne is lovely - it was recommended by family and friends and I can see why now. The attraction is the river, rather than lakes, but there is a good range of sites from the rustic to the decidedly OTT! We loved Camping Port de Limeuil which is a family owned site and has a lovely atmosphere. It’s right on the banks of the Dordogne and opposite a pretty village. There’s a kayak base immediately next door. It’s close enough to the Dordogne ‘big hitters’ while still being quiet and peaceful.
Our last trip with campervan before we sold it was the best. We spent to Bavaria, down to Austria and onto Czech Republic. Honestly couldn't say where we liked the best but the Czech Republic was fabulous. We took about 21 days with about 5 days in each and the other days travelling with overnights.

Dover is a pain for us.
Rotterdam suits our route to Italy.
Hull- Zeebrugge was perfect.
Dover no no because it's a 5hr drive, then a short crossing.
With the northern routes we have a relaxing journey with a nice luxury cabin.
I dont like the Chunnel it's too claustrophobic.

I'm going without the caravan next year; staying in a Eurocamp, just something different. The tolls in France add up to quite an amount with the' van on.
A day of all things motorhome and campervan. The show is held both in the main indoor arena and across the grounds. Catering, hot drinks and food options are available. Easy access to the site and free parking included. Win one of five pairs of day tickets
