We are heading over to Portugal in December and have been reading the laws regarding dash cams. Pretty grey area really. Has anyone been stopped or checked for using one over there? We have one in the car and one in the rear window of the caravan.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
TBH I would not bother taking them down as it is not illegal to own or even use one however any evidence on the dashcam cannot be used in court.
After all is it illegal to use a camera in Portugal. Often when you take a picture someone else unknown to you will be in the picture. However it is your choice.

That is not true, really is illegal to own a dashcam in Portugal, let alone use one.
There are just as many articles in the Portuguese press etc that say they aren't illegal but the use of any recording is subject to their privacy laws, it is indeed a very grey area!

You won't find a law saying they are legal.
There is no law making them illegal to own, the law that is being referred to is the Data protection act, it is the use of them that is illegal in Portugal under their interpretation of the data Protection Act.
Tesla have them built into the vehicle that would make them Illegal in Portugal.

Dash-cams in Portugal.
I'm a resident in the Algarve with an autocaravan. There is much debate in The Portugal News (10 September 2023) about the typically ridiculous situation:
In the readers' letters (the following week), (as France where I used to live), the illegality of an infringement of privacy, i.e. photographing someone's property or car, is in the publishing the photo without the owner's consent. It's a grey area, like many things in Portugal.
I understand that in the UK, certain police forces have a dedicated website for people to upload cases of dangerous driving.
There is growing public pressure for Portugal to amend many of their laws and regulations, including the use of dash-cams.
WILD CAMPING, (especially along the coast) is now expensively ILLEGAL
In general, (unlike Spain where wild camping is allowed) Portugal is a safe country with a low crime rate.
Be warned about complying with the regulations about using roundabouts, don't cut across the lane lines if going straight ahead - fines can be out of all proportion.
STOP signs, an English word the locals think only applies to tourists! Have good insurance, also make sure your shock absorbers and suspension are in good shape for the potholes.
