My daughter was in Pisa in Italy in July driving a hire car.
Today she received a demand for a fine €128 rising to €228 if not paid in 5 days.Apparently she drove through a restricted area in Pisa.
She must have been traced via the info she gave the Car Rental company.
Anyone had experience of a traffic fine from Italy ?
What if she doesn’t pay?

They normally either sell to a collection agency who add their own fees or try to pass to the hire company to debit her bank account and they too add an administrative fee.
If you check on the internet I think you will find that since we came out of the EU that the agreement we had to chase payment has now ceased.
I was caught with a speeding fine in Spain in August 2021. Normal early payment discount. Did not get the letter until well after the date had passed. Did not pay it and have heard nothing since.
Until you go back to Spain!
A case recently, woman was fined in Tenerife, left without paying, months later went on holiday to mainland Spain, was arrested on arrival and is now serving four months.
Your choice of course.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Driving a hire car? The hire company might debit the fine directly from the credit card registered at the time of the rental. Read the Ts&Cs carefully to see what the hire agreement was.
Am I the only one who thinks 'If you get a fine, then just pay it?' Once it's paid you can stop worrying about it, and go back to whatever country with a clear conscience.

I was originally going to pay but I had missed the early payment discount because the letter took ages to get to me. It was all in Spanish and I did not understand any of it.

The OP is talking about an Italian fine, not a Spanish one like yours. And a hire car.
Not understanding the letter is no excuse in law. Copy & paste (or type it) into Google Translate sentence by sentence & it’ll do a good enough job.
many years ago i had a letter through the post from germany. Hertz had passed my details on to the speed enforcement people. the fine was $20 so the offence was very minor.
i ignored it, got another letter, i ignored that. never heard anything again. i hired cars in germany since and didnt have a problem. but this was a long time ago, probably 15 years at least. i thought "theres no way the german police will chase me for a €20 fine."
more recently i had a fine from spain. i received a letter, i was going through the tunnel in question at the time of the offence, it was maybe €50. i phoned the department and paid it. the last thing i want is to be refused a hire car with my family stood there and ruin their holiday.
maybe nothing will happen but maybe it will, its the risk you take.

Instead of ducking and diving why don’t the offender just hold their hands up and pay the fine,
I can understand it if you feel an injustice has been done but surely if you are at fault you just accept it.
Perhaps it’s just me.
My neighbour was a bailiff for many years and told me of a local parking fine that went from £30 to over £900 !! And then the court ordered them in . Ok not Italy but your daughter could well be chased for the debt and costs could spiral out of control . Like others have said I would pay it but just having been the victim of an unjust PCN myself ( I got it overturned ) perhaps your daughter should investigate the matter further to see if the fine is actually valid ?

I would add to this that I was recently billed for import duty on some motorbike luggage from Germany. I paid it but they put it in the hands of a debt collection agency who hounded me threatening me with all sorts asking for more money each time. Eventually I got my bank to prove I had paid the duty and threatened them with my own legal action. The office of UPS is in Holland but the debt collection agency is in the U.K. this is just an example that they can escalate things via external debt collectors. BTW with the addition of the duty the luggage wasn’t any longer a competitive price. Before (2016) I wouldn’t have had to pay anything.

By the same token you need to know why you broke the law, whether there were any warning notices etc.

Or use your phone on 'camera' to translate the whole document without having to type anything.
