Haven’t seen the article but we can only drink our tap water (in Ayrshire) if we use our filter jug. No concern about its safety, the problem is it smells of chlorine / bleach - the dog won’t drink “neat” tap water.
We drink ours, and it tastes lovely. But my brother's water smells very strongly of chlorine, and is horrid to drink. They filter it before drinking it.

They would soon drink it if they were thirsty!
In South Devon we are lucky because we are one of those rare areas that has soft water so no furring up of kettles, washing machines etc and you get a great lather with your soap it also tastes just fine from the tap and makes the very best brew 😉

I drink water from the tap, or bottled tap water when in the caravan, we recently had to replace the caravan electric kettle due to the metallic/TCP taste in tea and coffee, this is down to chlorine in water effecting certain plastics.
We bought a stainless steel kettle this time
France is not one the list for safe tap water for drinking, which was a query from someone on this board recently, perhaps it was Monty, can't remember for certain.

Well not this Monty it wasn't!
When we camp in France, we do indeed drink bottled water, but that has far more to do with the plumbing installation on the 'pop-up' camp sites we are using. When you see the cavalier way temporary plumbed standpipes are fed from manholes adjacent to sewage manholes (with the covers missing/ajar!), you have your confidence in the supply quality somewhat 'compromised' as you wonder how much cross contamination occurred during installation! Then there are the unsanitary habits of some when actually using the standpipes! - toilet tanks being flushed from drinking water standpipes etc!
In more mainstream places, we are not unduly worried about the mains water. But we do tend to make it our mission to drink only Beer, Wine and the occasional Brandy, but that is just our way of supporting the French economy!
I don't drink French tap water when I am in France, and would only brush my teeth and spit it out afterwards.
For the trip to France in May 2023, I filled a glass jug with tap water at home before I set off, and kept topping it up with freshly boiled and cooled water when I was at the campsite.
I bought a pack of Evian 6x2L bottles during the first grocery shop in Auchan, and they are still sitting in the front passenger footwell unopened.

Like others, ours tastes of chlorine, especially after rain. We have filtered ours for years (it stops the kettle going black inside for one) and also have a filter jug in our caravan in France.
------------- Freedom is a light caravan and an open road.
Our tap water in Liverpool has a strong chlorine smell too. We use a Brita filter jug and it seems to improve it immensely. When in France we use the Brita jug to filter the tap water there and have never had any problems. However, that said, when I was growing up, my mum used to say I must have had a stomach like cast iron as nothing seemed to bother me. The rest of the house could be down with some vile bug or mild food poisoning or something similar and I would be absolutely fine!
We drink the water wherever we go - this year Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Germany and Belgium. We tend not to drink tea when away but do make coffee with it and drink it as a cold drink. Hmmmm, while we have not suffered any ill effects that we know of, I’m wondering if it’s wise to continue doing so. Perhaps the quantity of wine etc we drink when away helps make it safer 😆
