Need to take a closer look, but from memory, it's all plastic, isn't it? I just assumed it was nothing more than a bit of a clip to hold it firmly in place on the mount?

Found a pic of a "split Tag"... seems to show nothing inside that corresponding corner, and a standard button battery up above...

Yep, the latest version is a different design to the one in the image, of course if this new type is activating the battery only when the Tag is inserted into the windscreen mount, then trying to use the Tag without a windscreen mount would be a fruitless exercise, unless you have a spare mount to hand.
There have been theft issues from folk leaving there Tag in the windscreen mount, when the car has been left unattended, maybe this new design also acts as a deterrent for theft, highly unlikely though that it would act as a deterrent, as you can get a windscreen mount from the service areas, and also I would imagine simply inserting a thin piece of plastic into the receptacle on the Tag would have the same effect as inserting the Tag into the windscreen mount.
