Thanks Colin & 664DaveS, it's good to be back after such a long absence.

Life has been a bit tough of late, and camping has been on the back burner, my brother, my only sibling passed away back in October, he is ten years my senior and at 73 that terrible illness Alzheimer's finally took him, to be fair he is in a better place now, and in reality I lost my brother two years prior to his passing.

Hi liddsO & jaiash, it's good to be back thanks.

When we were last down in Frejus, June 2019, I would mostly watch any TV on my little satellite finder meter, Satlink WS-6906 it's little 3.5" screen is surprisingly easy to watch, the meter has a built in Lithium battery, so just a case of plugging it into the dish, instead of hooking up the Humax satellite receiver & Cello 15" TV and all the associated connections that go along with that set up.

We met a couple in the Loire region last year.
They had purchased a freeview type receiver in France. On it you could select the language option so certain programs would be in English. They aligned the van tv aerial to local transmitter.
Our Avtex tv will happily work if its retuned to local transmission but French only.
I have an old Maplin 60cm portable satellite and stand with Freesat box.
We used to use in in Wales (pre digital times). It also worked fine in Northern France.
We tried it at Millau but were only able to get a couple of channels,I know you need the bigger dish further south!I think that was after the satellite was changed.
We don't bother taking it now, in fact it might go up for sale.

Interesting 664DaveS that the French Freeview terrestrial service lets you select English audio, I wonder if that's the same with the satellite version Francsat.

I have often thought about buying a Francsat satellite receiver when in France, although the service is FTV (encrypted) not FTA, all the major supermarkets stock them and at around the Ä100 price point, sometimes on special offer even.

My only concern would be getting hold of a replacement viewing card, as included card with the box expires after 4 years so I have read.

will have to see if I can get a demo, to check out the English language bit, especial as Francsat carries Euronews.

A Francsat box would be great for watching the TDF back home in the UK, although to be fair Ch4 used to do pretty good coverage, but I am told it will be iTV4 this year, showing only the highlights in the evening, although I stand to be corrected on that.

A 45cm Dish would be fine pointing at Eutelsat (Atlantic Bird/Telecom) 5 Deg East, technically easier to receive than Sky TV as the French satellite is at a slightly higher elevation and closure to due South, than ASTRA 2 used for UK Sky TV.

For the TDF at home, Iíll be watching it advert free on Discovery + (providing I can put up with the Eurosport commentators which they use). I get it for free with my Sky TV subscription but it can be taken standalone for £6.99 a month. The alternative is ITV4 which does broadcast each stage live but only the climax of the stage - say the last couple of hours. At least thatís what they did last year but what put me off was the number of advert breaks they had.

Ken

Thanks Mrs Bonce, I met up with my Sil (74) & her daughter (40) today, both have had a far harder time with dealing with the loss of my brother, than I have, both are incredibly strong women, and are both now getting on with there lives as my brother would have wished, and all three of us had a big hug today, first time we have met since my brothers cremation back in October, time is an incredible healer for those left behind.
