I had this discussion with my colleague and clients earlier today, as we had a meeting arranged for early July 2025, and I wanted to gauge the likelihood of key personnel attending the meeting etc...
Those who were present all agreed that for people who do not need to take holidays during the summer school holidays from late July to early September, they are most likely to go on holiday in June and early July to avoid the crowds and hefty prices.
So we moved the meeting to the last week of June instead.
I have done my July trip this year already, and the August trip will be at an adult-only site.
Being childless by choice, I avoided camping during the summer school holidays when I was a tenter.
After I got my van, I was determined to go camping once a month from Easter to October, including August, to make the most of the van.
So I decided to go to an adult-only site in August 2021 and it was a revelation! I wish I had tried adult-only sites sooner!
Anyway, I shall enjoy less traffic on the roads soon!

Queues at airports and lots of other main routes too. Last Friday evening the sheer volume of traffic coming into North Wales on the A55 caused tailbacks down to Chester and up to Llandudno - that's regular right through summer on a Friday.
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
We never go anywhere during school holidays and bank holidays because of the ridiculous prices and crowds. Even when I was working I usually opted to work bank holidays and have a day off of my choosing.
We had 5 weeks in France from June 5th. Ferries and campsites were quiet.
We did have some rain but it was better weather than in UK.
We have no kids, from choice. Since retiring we avoid school holidays. It wasn't so easy when we were working.
We live in Shropshire so can go out in the country for days out or chill in the garden( if it's not raining!)

There was a mistake in my initial post, it's actually this weekend!
I can see the pros and cons of going early July, mid July or later in the holidays, we have never been in the first weeks of the school holidays although that's usually been down to my ex having our older kids and going on holiday, we always had them from mid August so that's when we always planned our trips.
We now only have our 6 year old that comes with us and went early to mid July before she started school and found the atmosphere on the sites was really good due to it being a similar time to French school holidays, so the campsites were pretty full, we are now back to mid to end of August and watch the campsites slowly empty as our two weeks go on, we went to Camping Paradis la Bretonnière a few years ago and were the only people left on the site by the end of our first week, I imagine it's great if you have kids being away from this weekend and it's a good atmosphere (if you like busy sites) and my post wasn't a dig at those that have no choice but to go away this weekend
As reported in the news this morning, there is some kind of IT outage that is affecting lots of operations, including air and other modes of travel.
