I’m planning my first extensive trip to “Roman” Germany: Aachen, Cologne, Koblenz, Trier in a campervan. Just starting to experience the usual pre-trip anxieties: I’ve not booked any sites; those with experience, would it be advisable at this time of year, or is it like France, where the other snow-birds come out, but it’s not heaving?
Any other tips and recommendations, personal experiences would be welcome!

Many years since we were there, so can’t speak for sites, but it’s a beautiful time of year. If it’s harvest time (I’d have to check dates), look out for the bars selling “federweisser” out of canisters: cloudy wine with bubbles, the last of the fermentation. Potent stuff but very seasonal.

Thanks Fiona: sounds like fun! Might have to limit the driving by the sound of it.

Check wine festival dates - looks like they start (in various areas) on 27 Sept this year, which might be too late for your trip.

We are going in a couple of weeks but Eurostar to Rotterdam then a river cruise int Germany.2 weeks.
We lived in Germany when I was in the RAF. Many happy memories. It was smaller then! We were tent campers in those days. We have been back since reunification.

We were in that area a few years ago and June/July rather than September.
However, for what it's worth, the sites by the rivers were really busy and we were glad we had booked in advance. I got the impression there was much less 'just turning up' than in France. If it was me, I would tend to have options for each area and email a day or two in advance to check availability or make a booking.
But that's just me!

Like Bofs we used to go earlier in the year, usually May/June. Never booked and don't recall ever having an issue. I would have thought it would be quieter in September because of the shorter evenings?

David
