We generally spend up to 6 or 7 weeks abroad at a time but I am having difficulty finding pet insurance that offers cover for this length of time. We are currently with SAGA but would like to change.

We’re about to stop paying £30+ pm for a young dog in UK as so far we’ve paid by credit card because the big surcharge means it’s never been worth claiming on the insurance.

We are with Pets Emporium and have up to 100 days European cover in the policy.
I know there are a lot of less favourable reviews on them, but we have always had speedy payment on claims and found them good to deal with.

Many Europeans don't have pet insurance because (generally) vet fees are cheaper. I know a lot of people from the UK who did have insurance, now live in France, and just put money aside equivalent to their monthly pet insurance premium.
I know you can get 'top up' insurance, which provided European cover but it separate to your normal pet insurance. Perhaps you could look into this.

We spoke to a dog owner last year in Portugal and her dog injured his hip. They took him to a vet in Lagos who said he needed an operation and booked him in. They flew a vet down from Lisbon to do the op and the total bill ---- just over 500 Euros!
