Hello everyone, I'm planning to do the cycle route from Bregenz to Berchtesgarten this summer with my daughter, including a tour of Lake Constance. I can't find much practical information about camping in Austria so I thought I'd ask some hardened campers. What do you think about turning up 'on spec' at Austrian campsites in high season? Two people, two bicycles and two small tents; could we expect them to squeeze us in somewhere or am I going to have to go through the control freak planning of finding and reserving every campsite in advance? In other other words, is Austria cycle touring friendly? Thanks for any advice you can give.

There are many cyclists in Austria, and as you wrote there is often a place for a tent.
There are many cyclists who ride this route, so campsites are really used to cyclists without a reservation.
Austria is a lovely country to camp, beautiful scenery. I think with a couple of small tents you have the advantage of being fitted in unlike a caravan or motorhome that needs a bit more room. If there are particular campsites you want to visit give them a ring, most people on reception will speak English. You could do this before you go, or even an email, just to check how flexible they are.
Oh dear. I am obviously at the early stages of planning this: I've just noticed that the route is almost entirely in Germany! After Bregenz it actually follows the Austrian/German border. As brother nations I expect German and Austrian campsites are pretty similar in their policies. I think both of the people who have kindly responded have valid points and I'll email a few of the likely campsites to get an idea of how the land lays. Thanks to both of you.
