Tall order, but hoping for any recommendations for a beachfront (or within 500 m) campsite that is within walking distance of a characterful town with restaurants and grocery shops. Southern France preferred but open to Sout-West France too. Many thanks!

Have a look at Ste Marie la Mer. There are a couple of sites with beach access (one is, or was, a municipal) and a small town with restaurants within walking distance. Places to visit include Collioure, Perpignan and Argeles sur Mer.

There are plenty of places which would fit your bill, all along the Mediterranean coast - but you can use www.eurocampings.co.uk to search for a variety of criteria. The 'Advanced Search' facility allows you to choose things like the size of site, the facilities it has, access to a beach (sandy or pebble), restaurant, nearness to a town, public transport, etc.,
One such is Camp du Domaine at Bormes les Mimosas/Le Lavandou, which has direct beach access. There are even pitches there with your own shower/toilet/etc directly on the pitch. Both Le Lavandou and Bormes les Mimosas are nearby, interesting, and there are lovely places all along that coast. Camp du Domaine, Le Lavandou/Bormes les Mimosas

There are beaches beside the Med and there are colourful towns within walking range. - but combining the two is very rare.
The only one I know personally is Camping La Pinede in Cavalaire Read the description of it on the Alan Rogers pages.
