I always found diesel cheaper in Europe than petrol. Diesel was cheaper in Britain too until diesel cars got popular, then suddenly it went up massively here. Funny that, as I've always believed it was cheaper to produce. Rip-off Britain strikes again!

Yes - have mainly driven diesels for the last 35 years, mainly because when we lived in Sheffield the bulk of my mileage was either holidays, meetings throughout Yorkshire / Humber, visiting parents in South Wales or wifes family on the Wirral. Could walk to work or catch a bus.
A no brainer in rural France - plus most mechanics in France can service a Berlngo on automatic pilot.
Currently £1.789 at my local Jet; I think that equates to €2.08, less than but not hugely different to what you’re paying in France. Brent Crude costs have gone back up over $100 per barrel.

Seen big queues at 2 garages in Dieppe with diesel approx 2.25€. Not sure why as subsequently seen plenty around that price with normal traffic
Were they Total Energies garages by any chance as it is reported that, due to their commitment to fixed prices (for now) a number of their petrol stations have run out of fuel. Many of them also have contracts with Police, Ambulace, Fire Brigade, Health Visitors - basically essential services - and limit the general public to 15 litres.
Only queue I've seen in this neck of the woods was at a TE garage in Sarlat.
I am a bit puzzled by some of the comments here as diesel has been dearer than petrol for some while now in France. I am in France at the moment and using Total Energies for fill-ups as the price is capped at 2.25 and that includes the better diesel with the additive which is normally more expensive. I noticed online today that in Calais at Auchan and Carrefour the price is 2.44.

I agree, as you rightly point out, diesel in France has been more expensive than petrol for years now.
In fact, diesel in France is generally more expensive than the UK, so much so, I always make sure I top up in the UK before coming to France these days.
I recently paid €2.399 per litre at a Carrefour near Nantes, that equates to £2.05 per litre, more than the £1.99 reported on today's news according to the RAC survey.
