Hi , haven't been on here for a long time. Planning the above trip. Can anyone who has made this journey recommend a route. We are in a car , want to avoid tolls and take around 5/6 days to get to Croatia. Would like some scenic stopovers if anyone can give some advice it will be gratefully received.

Anyone else put it into Google maps out of curiosity? Looks like quite an adventure, very exciting!
It seems Slovenia might be en route in one option. I had a study trip there, away from the tourist areas, and only youngsters spoke English; I found the older people spoke German. Keep away from woods at night: bears are extending their ranges as people give up agriculture. And be tick aware: there’s tick-borne encephalitis in Slovenia. Beautiful country though.

It really depends on what you want to see and do on the way. I used to drive to Dubrovnik which is only a short distance to the Montenegro border.

My prefered route was overnight ferry Harwich to Hook and after a good nights sleep aim for the Ruhr and then across Germany to the Austrian border and on to Slovenia via Graz. There are some lovely villages and towns in Norhtern Croatia away from the coast that have very little tourism. Then I would head south from Zagreb towards Plitvice Lakes for a night or two before what is now a fairly easy drive down to Dubrovnik. Avoiding the motorways in Croatia will mean a slow journey but you will miss so much.

Alternatively take a southern route and go through France and Italy as far south as Ancona or Bari and take the ferry across the Adriatic.

Beware that taking the non motorway routes will take a lot longer and not leave much time for visiting scenic places along the route. Personally I would concentrate on getting to Croatia and then having time to enjoy myself there and in Montenego. Pushing the driving I can do Dubrovnik in two long driving days from the Hook and via Germany. Watch out for vingettes for Austria and Slovenia.

Thanks for replies, time is on our side as we're away for a few months in Europe, hence the Montenegro vist to allow a longer stay. I was looking at abt 6 hours a day driving. The route i have been looking is a little into France , across Luxembourg and through Germany into Austria and then down through Slovenia into Croatia??

Via Michelin will give you a toll free route via Luxembourg and Germany, but you will still need to pay for vignettes for both Austria and Slovenia.

The advantage of the Harwich night ferry is that you can get a good nights sleep and save on overnight stays. It also avoids tolls until you get to Austria. You might be find the ferry is cheaper than from Dover if you take a day crossing from Harwich. There are a few nice towns and villages with campsites such as Brielle a short drive from the ferry terminal at Hoek van Holland if you have time to explore.
