pixie , just another thought , there is another large site at Valras , Domaine De La Yole that we almost went to last year.Looks ok , 550+ pitches though , maybe abit too big , but off peak may be ok. we decided against it as soon as we saw berges du Canal sites description in the Rogers guide , fell in love with it straight away & certainly werent disapointed on arrival.

Thanks for all the help everyone. We will give Californie Plage a few more days to reply to us and if they don't we will panic and try somewhere else.
just turn up , should have room .we go next friday , god , how good is that ? and have no definite plans for an area let alone a site.
just following the sun basically & if that means heading for the Med to get it then we will & worry about a site when we get there
You are braver than I am! We don't go until 2nd July which although outside of French School Holidays,is still classed as 'Peak Season' by a lot if sites and we are worried about everywhere being full. Our first choice site in that area was La Creole at Marseillan Plage but they have been fully booked since February and we were too late.

Hi Pixie,
We've been to La Carabasse at Vias a few times, in fact we're setting off for there on Wednesday next! Although a large site as has already been mentioned, the touring area is spacious and we always try and ensure that we're pitched well away from the entertainment areas. The pitches we use have a "Cabanna" which house your own private Loo, shower and washing-up area, and in June the site is usually reasonably uncrowded. So I wouldn't be too put off by "large sites" - incidentally in the uk we much prefer cl's so we wouldn't be using La Carabasse if we felt at all over commercialised.

what sort of prices does this site charge round this time of year ?
Californie plage at Vias are doing 10 nights for the price of 7 this month , about 170 euro for 10 nights for us which is very good IMHO
Hi Bev+jon,
sorry not replying sooner, been away getting the van down to Folkestone in prepararation. We booked La Carabasse through Haven Europe and for the 15 nights on pitch and including the Ferry fare we paid about £400 total (from memory that included a £90 supplement on the Ferry - Seacat) didn't think that was too bad.
I dont know if this is a bit late to help We went to domaine De La yole 2 years ago and found that it was very very french or dutch orientated dont get me wrong it was a nice site but very big the little lad didnt like that the pool is deep seems to be no shallow end and the kids pool was not deep enough to swim in there was`nt a lot for them to do at night and the entertanment was mostly french. very nice staff very helpful smallish food shop but not to bad. There was a very nice restarnt 2 mins walk outside the camp and not to long of a walk to the beach all in all we decided not to go back. we love the area and have been 4/5 times and have booked to go again this year but a bit nearer to Argeles
Thanks for the info. We did not consider La Yole when we saw the size of it. According to my Michelin guide it has 1007 pitches with is miles too big for us. We prefer smaller sites.
