Vendee, Saint Hilaire de Riez

Summer 2006 2 adults 1 4 nearly 5 year old (he likes all the activities & the boat trip there, we like the cheap wine)

Looking for reviews not having an amazing amount of luck.

Pros & cons of each would be of a great help

We think that there are two Les Ecureuils in Saint Hilaire. If you are thinking of the one that Eurocamp use then it was fine four years ago. The indoor pool was useful on the cloudy days, the whirlpool, slides &  other pools great on the sunny ones. The rest of the site was clean & tidy. The 'Beach 500m' needs to be treated with care. The sand might start 500m from the campsite gate but the dunes seem to run for at least another km before you reach the sea! Very hot, soft, endless sand meant we only went once. Other beaches in the area were easier to get to even if it did mean taking the car. My kids were 6 & 4 & loved it.

No experience of Sol A Gogo.

We were at Sol-a-Gogo a few years ago. Lovely clean site, good staff, nice pool, bar takeaway etc. A quietish site, not the all singing/dancing type but a happy medium I would say. Very close to local amenities, within walking distance to the local Super-U.

Access to the beach is as described above with Les Ecureuils, through the dunes before you reach it but don't recall it being quite so far away. The dunes are good for kite-flying if your young man likes that!!

Area around is lovely and well worth a visit. Apremont lake a short drive inland is a good visit. Lake with beach and watersports (pedaloes and canoes) kids playground etc, lovely 'frenchie' village to walk around with a castle to view! Pattiserie there sells a mean french tart!! hehe

Thanks for the info, the tent has been put away for this year, so will give the little one something to get excited about for next summer.

Will pass the info on to the important one so the decision can be made.

Thanks again

Hi Rede

We stayed at the Les Ecureuils in 2004 , it was a good site if you got apitch at the rear of the site . Away from the road as it was a bit hectic near the reception and pool area.

We found the area a bit too much "in your face" and will not be going back again in a hurry prefer the more quieter areas.
