Hi Sandie,
when we've either been crossing to go on holiday in either the Loire, or the Vendee we used the Portsmouth - Le Havre route. It's a long crossing, so gives you plenty of time to sleep, stretch your legs etc. Then the journey from the port to the destination's less tiring.
Since we bought our place here in the Loire Valley, France, we've used the same route for all our journeys as Portsmouth's pretty easy to use as a port, and certainly less trouble to get to than say, Dover.
The western channel crossings are usually quite a bit more expensive than Dover-Calais, etc. though, but less of a drive on this side.
