We are planning a week in Jura in August, on the way back I was thinking of travelling through Germany Luxembourg and Belgium mappy says it is only 2 hours longer and no tolls. Having only been abroad once (France last year) and spent 1/2 hour in the queue for customs at Dover I was wondering if we were going to spend all day in queues.

Borders in Europe hardly exist now. The border posts are still there but generally you just slow down (speed restrictions) and drive slowly through. Switzerland can be slower but thats because they are checking to see if people have a vignette for their car.

Three years ago we drove through France and Belgium to Germany and we hardly noticed the change of country, we did not even slow down.

It was noticable last year that there were more chicanes of cones at borders to slow the traffic than in previous years but no queues.  Switzerland is not in the EEC so does have customs posts.   The UK is of course a different matter!  Uncle Gordon wants to keep his coffers full. 

Incidently, if travelling via Strasborg by the A 35, that is a toll road from Metz to Strasborg.   This can be avioded by travelling on the A31 from Metz to Nancy and then to Mulhouse via Epinal. A shorter but slightly slower road from Epinal but nice scenery and a welcome break from Motorway driving.
