I havn't been with the RAC, but I left the AA a few years ago because they started hiking up prices. Not only did they hike up the price, they started to put restrictions on usage as well.
We now get our breakdown cover through our car insurers ( Direct Line ). We Pay around £90 per annum for joint memebrship ( Husband and Wife ). For this we get everything we got in the AA. I am not sure about European cover though.
We have had to use the service a couple of times and it has been very fast. It actually works out better than the AA or RAC ( in the UK anyway ), because when you report that you have broken down, they call the nearest service to you to sort your problem out. It could be the local garage if they have an arrangement with them. The last time I broke down was on the way back from Bristol and they had a pickup truck ( non-fixable fault ) to me in 10 mins. They towed me 2.5 hours to home.
Last August I extended my UK breakdown cover with Norwich union to 'European' until renewal in November - It cost me £10 extra [total]. At renewal they wanted £45 to keep 'european cover' for the year so I removed it and will put it back on in August.
Hi , I have breakdown cover with More Than (Royal Sun Alliance ) The current premium I paid was £62.15 which included Roadside assistance, recovery, homecall and European Assistance. They were by far the cheapest and with a solid company. Give then a try

Insure and Go do European break down cover. It is Europ Assist which is one of the big boys in the market and my cover for 2 weeks over christmas was just under £30. You can buy an annual policy but I dont know the price for that. They have all the prices on their website. You can also buy on the web and download your policy documents instantly.
Most of the responses here seem to be from tent campers, and if you only have to worry about recoveryof a car, it is probably fine to go for the cheapest option you can find. However, once a caravan comes into the equation, things begin to look very different. Most of the standard service providers either do not recover caravans, or place strict restictions on the length etc that they will deal with. It is for this reason that we pay the, admittedly, high price for RAC Arrival recovery through the C&CC. There is no real substitute for a specialist policy, usually through one of the clubs, as many people have found too late, to their cost.
Been with AA for years pay about £80 per year joint cover, not penalised for caravan. We the members are covered not the cars. So when my wife and child traveling as passengers in a friends vehicle found themselves stranded over 200 miles from home with a non member in a non members vehicle the AA brought them home to the door and then took the non members car another 6 miles to the garage.
Small price to pay for the safety of my family.
Exceelent service too. when i travel to europe in May with caravan i will quite happily pay what i have to for the peace of mind.

Cant understand this ...RAC just quoted me £95 to extend my UK cover when I explained my caravan was in France and I just wanted car cover......is this for caravan recovery as well ?
