if you travel abit further south/east of Orleans you are into the loire area with plenty of sites on the river. we struggled 2 years ago for a site close to orleans and went a touch further to St Pere Sur Loire. there are several sites in that area good for a stopover.depends where you are heading i suppose, this route fitted the bill perfectly for us en-route to serignan.
Try Salbris, 40 miles S of Orleans. We've used it a number of times
As you enter Salbris from N turn L at the second of 2 sets of traffic lights (campsite signed) You then turn R to the campsite after about 200m.
On the edge of a lake and very pleasant to relax after a day driving.
If you need fuel as you go S next morning turn L in centre of Salbris 100m after river bridge onto D724 Souesmes road. There is a new Super U on L at 400m.

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
What kind of stopover? Tent or B&B? We stayed at the Etap at Orleans last year which was Ok, this year we will look for a different chain though with airconditioning.
We are travelling to Portiragnes (in between Perpignan and Marseilles). We leave S. Wales at 2am for an 7-40am crossing (Dov Cal). Believe Orleans would be perfect as its just over 1/2 way from Calais. We will tow our Caravan.
BTW thanks all for your suggestions and I'd welcome any more, now that I've clarified a few things.
Cheers

Portiragnes ? isnt that near Beziers and very close to Serignan if its the place im thinking it is ?
nice one , some great beaches down there. you will be very close to the canal du midi there. some nice walks/bike rides along there.
sounds like you are heading the same way as we did, from Orleans, we headed for Nevers, Clermont Ferrand , Millau then Beziers. it is a long haul from Orleans down to the med in one go however, we attempted it but i was knackered so we stopped near Millau for a night aato break the journey. coming home we did Serignan to the Loire in one go , about 400 miles, then onto calais the next day.
depending on when you are travelling you may have a problem with getting a campsite near Nevers. The magny- Cour F1 circuit is close by and if you pick GP weekend you could be stuck for a stop-over. not sure when the GP is, sure its late June, early July ??
its still a fair haul from calais to Nevers but id say its about halfway to your destination.
I've stayed at Camp Municipal d'Olivet which is about 4km SW of Orleans. It's a good clean site, but gets very busy on the weekend as it's a "transit" site for people travelling South. There is a Tram Service into town and Gardens and the Source of the Loire nearby within walking distance.
The phone No. is 02 38 63 53 94 or 02 63 82 82 (for the Mairie)
The address is Camp Municipal d'Olivet, Rue de Pont-Bouchet, 45160 Olivet
It is listed in the Caravan Club Europe 1 Camping Book
