I managed to use my Abbey debit card on the motorways and in supermarketslast year. As we went "early" (May) there was a bit of a prob in that they didn't expect us to be able to PIN. But we usually could if they let us. You'd have thought the British banks would have advertised a bit in tourist areas, wouldn't you!

When I got married in 1984 a French friend came over and was astounded we didn't have chip & pin. That's how long they've had it over there, so no wonder they need to update it! I went to live in Belgium in 1988 and they had it too by then (and cable tv, but that's beside the point). It's been **amazingly** slow getting this technology over this side of the channel.

I've just driven through France on the way to, and back from a skiing holiday in Austria, and used my debit card in the toll booths on the motorways.  No problems anywhere.

thanks conrad,
I checked it out. You can get the gizmo from any of the motorway owners (there are 6 or 7) and they all do a variety of deals. This year we're only going to France the once an not all that far on the motorway, so we're going to give it a miss this time. Once you've paid the subscription it's dearer than paying with money, and we're on holiday and not in a hurry. The queues aren't too bad in the CB (bank card)lanes anyway.

thanks again,

Liz

Surely it is not worth getting Telepeage for one single trip to France a year, especially if you are using the A75, as it means for about a third of your journey you will be using a free motorway with one single toll at Millau?

On the subject of Chip and Pin, I have not come across a single toll Booth where it has been necessary to sign or enter a pin, and the only place I have not been able to use a UK Credit Card is on unmanned petrol pumps.
