We are looking to holiday for a week near disneyland and then a week near biarritz, as we believe its great surf round there. My partner and daughter love bodyboarding!. We are going over to france on the eurotunnel and then leaving via Bilbao. The thing is I'm not sure where to stay, I have found accommodation in Landes near Lake Leon, but the coast looks to say the very least very desolote! Are we better going further south towards Biarritz? Whats the area like round there and is there enough for a family of 4 to do. Whats the centre of Biarritz like, and what are the prices like for drinks / food etc. Does anyone have any photos? Sorry about all the questions but I really want to get this right as its our "Big Summer holiday"! Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Does anyone know of any good sites for the kids in the area, we might just decide to take our tent!
Cheers everyone!
Karen

I have not been to the middle of Biarritz for many years but I have no reason to suspect it is any less sophisticated, classy or expensive than it was years ago.
we are booked onto Lou Puntaou for 2 weeks from 20th August which is around Lake Leon. The Sunelia site le col vert looks good too! I know that Lou Puntaou have been booked up for a couple of weeks now regarding accommodation in the holidays so I feel that it must be a decent site if it is that much in demand!! Or hoping it is! We have 3 kids and I have looked at the area and there is an ariel adventure park pretty close and a waterpark at Seignosse.Plus of course the dune de pyla for a day out and Bordeaux too so hopefully there will be enough to do also looks at the matthews holiday site forum as they have had quite a few postings on about the area. I know that there is a daily market in Leon too which is walkable from the site. Wherever you end up have fun !!!
A few years ago we stayed here http://www.pavillon-royal.com/pavillon-royal/ It is a lovely campsite and right on the beach. Being on the Atlantic coast they tend to have bigger waves!!! Further North there are lots of campsite with access to some beautiful Atlantic beaches, miles upon miles of sand. I don't understand what you mean by desolate? Surely that is the beauty of this part of France? What do you actually want to do beyong enjoying the beaches, eating good food and enjoying a glass or two of the local wine? Sounds like heaven to me!!!

Hubby wanted to go near Biarritz this year so after research decided on Pavillon Royal but they were full many weeks ago for our dates in August. So we have gone for Camping la Mer at Labenne Ocean. The beach is in walking distance( I drive all the time so want a break!) there is a water park and aerial runway park nearby too. I too was taken with Lac Leon as we want to do watersports so when we get down there I will have a nose for future reference
We were there in 2003 & stayed at the Camping Albret Plage at Vieux Boucau. If we went again I'd stay at the site next door - the Vieux Port in Messanges.
There's plenty of surfing on all the beaches down there, and many beaches have lifeguards. There's usually a little beachside attraction where you can get something to eat, but they're not the sort of seasides with a promenade etc.
Biarritz was very beautiful, but it was that very hot summer so we didn't do much walking around. Found a creperie for lunch and I don't think it cost an arm and a leg.
Well, if you like big waves this is the place, the only thing that spoilt our holiday there was the rough sea,we had small kids then but the area is great, we stayed at Pavillion Royale a great site, booked through the caravan club, plenty to do in the area , not to far toSt Jean de Luz and the Spanish border at Hendaye,a visit to Lourdes was also on the cards, not my cup of tea but hrh insisted, many campsite in the area up coast towards mimizan plage good,(if you like pine forests) good luck S/C
